NAIDOC Week NAIDOC South Australia is a time to celebrate the histories, cultures achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.   It gives First Nations people and non-Indigenous people the opportunity to celebrate and connect with community and Country. And it’s a chance for everyone, not just First Nations people, to celebrate all aspects of First Nations histories and cultures. #NAIDOC #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOC2024

The Kleinfelder team took time to acknowledge NAIDOC week and the importance of celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The team participated in events to learn more about First Nations culture, investigated and presented ways to promote and foster increased Indigenous participation in our industry, and incorporated conscious supply changes to our business. All with the aim of learning how to be the best ally we can be.   This NAIDOC week we at Kleinfelder continue to make conscious focused changes and challenge ourselves to learn and do more; for we believe even today’s smaller deliberate changes can become the instinctive strides forward of tomorrow. #NAIDOC2024

From Jaffna to Australia: Embracing NAIDOC Week and the Power of Resilience As a Tamil refugee born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, the journey to safety and stability has been one of profound challenges and invaluable lessons. Experiencing the horrors of civil war firsthand instilled in me a deep appreciation for peace, cultural heritage, and the importance of community. This personal history has given me a unique perspective on the significance of NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC celebrates the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It’s a time to honour their rich traditions and acknowledge the resilience and strength that has carried them through adversity. Much like the Tamil community, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have faced significant challenges. Their perseverance and unwavering spirit remind us of the importance of unity, respect, and the power of cultural identity. NAIDOC Week is more than just a celebration; it’s a call to action for all Australians to engage with and support Indigenous communities. By learning from their stories and standing together, we can foster a more inclusive and respectful society. Blak, Loud and Proud," is a powerful call to action for everyone to celebrate Indigenous identity and resilience. NAIDOC Week provides a platform for all Australians to engage with and learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. How to Celebrate NAIDOC Week 2024 Participate in Events: Look for NAIDOC Week events in your community, such as cultural performances, art exhibitions, workshops, and discussions. Support Indigenous Voices: Follow and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders, artists, and businesses. Share their work and stories, and amplify their voices in your networks. Learn and Educate: Take this time to educate yourself about the history and ongoing challenges faced by First Nations peoples. Promote Cultural Pride: Show your support by wearing the colors and symbols of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This year’s NAIDOC Week will again celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with the theme of “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud”. ANZSOG acknowledges the importance of NAIDOC Week as a celebration which honours First Nations peoples and reminds us of the importance of our own journey to become a culturally competent organisation, making a positive contribution to First Nations policy and public administration. Held across Australia from 7-14 July 2024, this year’s NAIDOC Week recognises the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire as a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In NAIDOC week, and throughout the year, ANZSOG stands with the First Nations of Australia and supports aspirations for a just and equitable relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, and for First Nations communities to have control over their own lives. Despite the progress we have made, there are still many structural and cultural changes that need to happen within public services to make this a reality, and we are proud that ANZSOG is working to help make those changes happen.

As Australia celebrates NAIDOC Week from Sun 7 – Sun 14 July, let’s take a moment to appreciate the profound history, dynamic culture, and significant accomplishments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. One brilliant example is the 2024 Senior Australian of the Year, Yalmay Yunupiŋu. A teacher and linguist from north-east Arnhem Land, Yalmay has been recognised for her teaching excellence and her efforts to promote cultural language by translating Dr Seuss’s books into her native Yolŋu Matha language. She is among the many Indigenous trailblazers making a real difference in her community. NAIDOC Week 2024 This year’s theme is ‘Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud’ honouring the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture. The organisers explain that this theme was designed to honour the “enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture — with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples”. Why do we celebrate? The origins of NAIDOC Week can be traced back to 1920. What began as a day of protest has transformed into a week-long festivity that honours First Nation’s culture and history. The term NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. To heal the Nation The truth is Australia does not take enough pride in our Indigenous history, especially when Indigenous Australians represent the world’s oldest continuing culture. Now, more than ever, especially in the wake of the failed 2023 referendum to enshrine an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament, we need to take radical action to uplift our fellow Indigenous Australians. As Muslims residing in Australia, we too are “settlers” on this land. Our community spans numerous multicultural groups, and many of us can relate to the distress of colonisation. Co-designed with Indigenous partners, this framework ensures better access to government-held Indigenous data for First Nations Australians. It emphasizes collaboration, capability-building, and an inclusive data system. 💎 These governance requirements aim to contribute directly to ‘closing the gap’ by enhancing data accessibility, quality management and ethical use of indigenous data, and promoting inclusivity via ensured respectful collaboration and decision making for uplifting these communities.
