#Juneteenth reminds us of the ongoing need for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in healthcare professions, including optometry. As we commemorate #Juneteenth, it underscores the importance of addressing historical inequities in healthcare access and outcomes for minority communities. #Juneteenth also prompts us to reflect on our roles in cultivating the next generation of healthcare professionals. It highlights the importance of mentorship and education in empowering BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) individuals to pursue careers in optometry and other healthcare fields. By nurturing diverse talent, we can address gaps in how we practice, where we practice, and who we provide care to, empowering and educating those communities along the way. In essence, #Juneteenth encourages optometrists and healthcare professionals to celebrate progress, advocate for equity, and continue working towards a healthcare system that provides high quality, accessible, compassionate, and inclusive care for all. As the population continues to age, there is an increased need for widespread access to eye care. With the number of incoming Ophthalmology residents being so far fewer than needed to replace the population of retiring Ophthalmologists, Optometrists are more vital to eye care than ever before. To consider them anything less than vital to the field would be a disgrace. Health policies need to reflect this. #optometry #AOA #healthpolicy

Optometry Australia's State Lead for Victoria, Lyn Hsieh, recently engaged with OV/SA members to better understand eye care health needs in western Victoria. Feedback was then reported to the Western Victoria Primary Health Network (WVPHN) as part of its triennial consultation of health needs in the area. Christopher Wolfe's post highlights some confusion related to CLIA. Mainly, the differences between CLIA "Certificate of Waiver" (relatively common in the optometric community if you are performing tests for #osmolarity, #MMP-9 and adenovirus) and a CLIA "Certificate of Registration" (very rare in the optometric community because the number of "moderately complex" tests that are performed in office have been limited, some newer tests like #lactoferrin and #IgE may change this). We thought it would be wise to provide a brief overview of the differences of each "Certificate" The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulate laboratory testing and require clinical laboratories to be certified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) before they can operate and accept human specimens for testing. There are different types of CLIA certificates, including the Certificate of Waiver and the Certificate of Registration. Here's how they differ: CLIA Certificate of Waiver: ✔ Laboratories that perform only waived tests are eligible for a Certificate of Waiver. ✔Waived tests are simple tests with a low risk for erroneous results, as determined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). ✔These tests are typically easy to perform and have minimal chance of error when conducted correctly. ✔Examples of waived tests include certain pregnancy tests, dipstick urine tests, and some rapid strep tests. ✔Laboratories with a Certificate of Waiver are subject to fewer regulatory requirements compared to laboratories performing more complex testing. CLIA Certificate of Registration: ✔Laboratories that perform non-waived, moderate, or high complexity testing must obtain a Certificate of Registration. ✔Non-waived tests are those that do not meet the criteria for waived tests. These tests have a higher risk for erroneous results and require more stringent quality control and oversight. ✔Moderate and high complexity tests are categorized based on the complexity of the testing procedures and the level of expertise required to perform them. ✔Laboratories with a Certificate of Registration must comply with more extensive regulatory requirements, including personnel qualifications, quality control procedures, proficiency testing, and laboratory inspections. To summarize, the main difference between a CLIA Certificate of Waiver and a #CLIA Certificate of Registration lies in the complexity of the tests performed. Laboratories conducting only waived tests can obtain a Certificate of Waiver, while those performing non-waived, moderate, or high complexity testing require a Certificate of Registration, which entails more stringent regulatory oversight and compliance. When you were in optometry school, how much did you learn about patient education beyond the chair? 🤔 I remember learning about what to *say*🗣 and how to *say it*...but what about those of us who aren't auditory learners? 👉🏼 70% of our patients need education beyond discussion 👈🏼 (read that again! 👀) We're doing our patients a disservice by relying solely on our conversations with them. We're doing our patients *and* our practice a disservice by passing off the responsibility of patient education to third party entities.
