Learn from the very best, Rita Pierson, about the importance of 'Human Connection' in classrooms. Educators, parents and school leaders need to provide a safe and nurturing space at school and home for children to thrive! Key Learnings - - Students don't learn from people they don't like. (Isn't it true for grown-ups too?) - Teaching and Learning should bring joy. - Every child needs an adult who will never give up on them. #SEL #SELinclassrooms #humanconnection #teachingandlearning

The value & importance of human connection Every kid needs a champion | Rita Pierson | TED May 3, 2013 Rita Pierson, a teacher for 40 years, once heard a colleague say, "They don't pay me to like the kids." Her response: "Kids don't learn from people they don't like.'" A rousing call to educators to believe in their students and actually connect with them on a real, human, personal level. https://lnkd.in/dpnsr-CY https://lnkd.in/dpnsr-CY

I came across this powerful speech during my first module in my Med in inclusive education. It forced me to ponder over how i could improve my lesson planning, instructional strategies, individual scaffolding/modifications in my teaching at the students zone of proximal development (ZPD). As educators in general and as Inclusion teachers in particular we have to keep the students needs at the core of our teaching. My favourite quote from Ignacio Estrada summs ny approach to teaching. "If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." https://lnkd.in/d-8xu4Fm

The danger of a single story I watched this video for the first time many years ago, during a training session, and every time I watch it I understand it a little more. Working in the education sector really has given me now, more than ever, the enthusiasm and commitment, to make it so that stories like this, don’t need to be told, for us to understand their lessons. ‘A single story forms stereotypes and the problem is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete’ ‘I began reading at the age of 4, and writing at the age of 7. I started telling the exact type of stories that I was reading, where all the characters were white with blue eyes, they played in the snow, they ate apples and they talked about the weather’ ‘What this demonstrates is how impressionable we are, especially as children.’ ‘It emphasizes how we are different, rather than how we are similar.’ ‘Stories can break the dignity of the people, but stories can also repair.’ It is so important that we get it right from the start, it shocks me still that we live in a world, still, after all this time, that would prefer to use rudyard kiplings words of ‘half monster half baby’, to describe a black woman, than just see her as a woman. Employees, need to get it, or the children never will. It’s really making me think about some of the challenges the sector will face, particularly in communities where ‘ethic minorities’ are greater in number, and don’t see themselves understood or represented in the curriculum, nor do they seem themselves reflected in their role models, with open doors to self doubt, lack of understanding, self worth and passion. I’d highly recommend giving this a watch, let’s get that conversation going, to identify what educational establishments need from HR to support them in making that change, and how we as professionals can devise and deliver this. https://lnkd.in/e3aX2THp #talktomeaboutdiversity
