Addressing Mining Challenges with MassFlow: Air Gap Prediction Air gap formation along the cave front poses a significant hazard in cave mining operations as it may lead to an air blast event, impacting worker safety and operations. MassFlow offers a solution by simulating air gap formation and predicting such occurrences. This empowers engineers to design effective cave plans and mitigate risks associated with possible air gap formation. The development of an air gap is tracked in MassFlow through the addition of zero mass “air” markers at any location where an Isolated Movement Zone (IMZ) meets a vertical boundary to flow and material continues to be extracted from drawpoints. With MassFlow, you can: • Specify rock mass strength, fragmentation, porosity, and other properties using a block model • Control the rate of caving and draw point activity • Proactively predict air gap formation • Mitigate safety hazards and operational concerns See below how MassFlow has been coupled with FLAC3D for a hybrid model to consider the influence of stress, simulate the caving process, and determine the formation of any air gaps, yielded material, and cave back associated with the material drawn. This can also be done using 3DEC. Use the block model to specify the cave back and limit flow or couple MassFlow with FLAC3D or 3DEC to incorporate stresses and IMASS, or another material model, to model the cave back.
