Fast forward to 2024 and the brand has managed to narrowly surpass Pepsi to claim the No. 2 spot, which Pepsi held for nearly 40 years! 💪 Dr Pepper’s resurgence can be attributed to a strategy encompassing three key elements: 1) Engaging the younger generation: #DrPepper has become the fastest-growing soda brand among Gen Z, aided by its innovative flavour additions. Permanent offerings now include dark berry and strawberries-and-cream, with the new creamy coconut flavor gaining traction. 2) Shedding its old image: Despite being 139 years old, Dr Pepper has embraced modern trends, such as participating in a quirky TikTok trend involving pickles in Dr Pepper, and cleverly engaging with a viral rumor about the soda being discontinued. 3) Highlighting its sweetness: Recognizing shifts in consumer habits, Dr Pepper has repositioned itself as an indulgent treat. Never had this product, but the post is an interesting test case for startup and emerging brands. Big positive is the agility and collaborative approach. Awesome to see a founder, who is rightfully prideful, hear consumer feedback and respond. Many big brands have found their product/market fit by smartly leveraging user feedback. The negative though is that the product gets “commodtized” as it gets “simplified”. Maybe their formula is uniquely great, or it could just be very good and replicable. Challenge for many smaller brands is to be understood simply but not simplified into a product. Still, hats off to this team for what looks like some real entrepreneurial skill.
