Right now the "cost" of nursing is rolled into the room fee for insurance reimbursement to the hospital for a patient's bill. This is why hospitals are always at odds with nursing staff trying to reduce nurses per shift and increase nurse to pt ratio. Because this ultimately cuts cost for the business. Which is typical for businesses. It's time to bring the way nurses are paid from out of the dark ages and into the light. Length of stay, hospital acquired infections, patient satisfaction with care, and more will all improve when nurse reimbursement is in line with what we provide: service. Healthcare service.
