Moved into a new apartment last week and needed a new desk chair. I looked online and as you can imagine, found 100's of options. Spoilt for choice, I still couldn't decide. Checked Argos and found one that caught my eye. Noticed "100 ordered in the last 24 hrs". That made me think it might be the one, given its popularity, so I bought it. 🚨 I'm joining the "Taylor Swift is self-publishing" discussion. In case your feed hasn’t been overrun with Swifties and publishing debates, here’s the gist: Taylor Swift is releasing her first-ever book, focused on the Eras Tour, exclusively through Target. While many are discussing why Swift, who could have secured a major publishing deal, chose self-publishing, I’m interested in the marketing masterclass she gave us. Swift understands her fandom’s power. They’ve boosted voter registration by 400k and crashed Ticketmaster—twice. Their devotion to her work is unmatched, and booksellers know it too. Her book would fly off the shelves in any store. Yet, her team made a strategic decision to partner solely with Target, maintaining strong brand alignment. As someone who loves a good Target run and considers myself a casual fan of Swift, I know the overlap of these two audiences is huge. The takeaway? Whether self-publishing or going the traditional route, knowing where your audience is matters. It’s about connecting with them where they already spend their time. All authors may not have the power to strike exclusive retail deals, but they can find their audience’s favorite spaces, online or offline, and promote their books within them.
