Chinese scientists have developed an innovative Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) utilizing electric vehicle technology. This advanced catapult can propel a 30-ton projectile in just 2.1 seconds, potentially reducing costs associated with aircraft carrier EMALS catapults significantly. The researchers assert that this new catapult system is characterized by a compact design, simple structure, lightweight construction, and does not necessitate a complex power supply system. According to the South China Morning Post, it has the capacity to handle twice the weight of China's most advanced stealth aircraft, the J-20. Existing EMALS function by propelling an aircraft along a lengthy, straight track lined with numerous electromagnetic coils that generate thrust for continuous acceleration as the aircraft moves forward. However, these EMALS have encountered growing issues such as reliability concerns, low efficiency, and prolonged malfunctions. The scientists believe that this innovative technology could potentially free up valuable deck space on carriers, allowing other warships to conduct long-range air strikes. If proven effective, this technology could also provide a significant advantage to the Chinese Navy. The success of this development is attributed to China's expanding electric vehicle technology market. Electric vehicles utilize torque motors for rapid acceleration and convert braking energy into stored electricity. AIRCRAFT CARRIER LAUNCH SYSTEM Catapult Technology - Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System Performing takeoff and landing maneuvers with an aircraft is relatively straightforward on a lengthy runway, but executing these actions from an aircraft carrier poses significant challenges due to the restricted space, typically spanning only 100 to 150 meters, and the necessity to accelerate rapidly from 0 to 165 knots within a short timeframe. To surmount these problems, catapult technology is employed on aircraft carriers. A conventional catapult system comprises two pistons connected to a shuttle. Positioned beneath the carrier, a reactor generates steam, which is then channeled through pipes to propel the pistons. These pistons thrust the shuttle, to which the aircraft is affixed via its front landing gear, along a specially constructed track known as the catapult track on the flight deck. Subsequently, the aircraft, with its engines activated, is propelled forward at high velocity, facilitating takeoff from the carrier. An evolution of this technology is the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), pioneered by General Atomics for the US Navy. Unlike its steam-powered predecessor, EMALS utilizes a linear induction motor to catapult aircraft, offering smoother acceleration and reduced strain on airframes. Additionally, EMALS boasts advantages such as lower weight, reduced costs, diminished maintenance requirements, and the capability to launch a broader spectrum of aircraft.
