Plan sponsors interested in health equity may want to check out ASAM’s recommendations to policymakers. Group health plans can do a lot to facilitate access to evidence based care while these measures become public policy. Why bother? Well, in 2022, ASAM reports that 1 in 5 were diagnosed with substance use disorder and 1 in 3 Americans will meet the criteria for alcohol use disorder sometime in their lifetime. Let’s consider a DEI benefit strategy in 2024 that includes manager training, care navigation, access to centers of excellence, coverage of MAT medications and removal of formulary restrictions, workplace harm reduction including access to Naloxone and peer recovery services, early education about risks of use for all ages, and more.
