"Tap in and Tap out!" 🚉 Train passengers travelling to and from 90 railway stations in the West Midlands and Greater Manchester will be able to use tap-in and tap-out ticketing from next year. Rail minister Huw Merriman confirmed the stations will be fitted with technology ensuring passengers get the best fare by tapping payment cards. It comes after the government agreed to help Greater Manchester integrate its public transport network as part of a new devolution deal by introducing a daily cap on fares for local trains as well as buses and trams. Multi-modal fares are set to be rolled out by 2030. I personally believe that this is a fantastic idea. It has worked great for London, so why not at other UK major train stations! 👏 Paying for a ticket this way will also provide the best fare available, which will provide a huge saving for daily commuters. Do you think this is a great idea too? #railway #railwayindustry #train #railwayjobs #executivesearch #transportjobs #transportcareers

Tapping in and out is a more convenient process, but as this is not being provided with a level of Fares Reform it lacks one of the main requirements for PAYG to be successful - confidence. One of the reasons London is so successful is that customers have confidence in what they will pay - or more likely they dont know what they will pay, but that it will be the cheapest fare. Overlaying PAYG on to our current Fare structure, with its range of advance or operator specific fares, will mean that whilst it will likley charge the correct fare, it may not be the cheapest - and it could be different dependent on which train operator you are on, even for the same routes.

Having been in London today - the tap in tap out process just seems so logical - why wouldn’t we want it in every major transport hub? Great news but 2030 still feels a long timeframe.

I think it's great! Much more convenient and efficient and could increase usership.

It’s so much more convenient! I was thinking about this when I arrived in to Euston on Monday and went on to the Underground … there used to be a massive queue at the ticjet offices back in the old days, and then a queue at the Oyster machines if you needed to ‘top up’ your card … now, no queues!!

Every time I go back home to Croydon I can see how easy it is to tap in and get around - it will be so great to finally have that in the north too 👏🏼
