This week, we're stepping into the exciting world of discovery and innovation as we celebrate British Science Week! Here's a bit about why it's a pivotal moment for learners, educators, and thought leaders alike. The power of science is extraordinary, transforming our understanding of the vast cosmos to the intricate workings of our own DNA. British Science Week is an annual celebration that shines a spotlight on the vibrant world of science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) in the UK. 🧪🔬 At its heart, this week is about inspiration. Young minds are encouraged to delve into experiments, older students to consider STEM careers, and adults to appreciate the science that shapes our daily lives. There's a palpable energy as institutions open their doors, hosting workshops, lectures, and activities, sparking curiosity across all ages. From the rolling hills of the Scottish Highlands to the dynamic cityscapes of London, science acts as a unifying language. It's in the way we tackle climate change, how we push the boundaries of medicine, and in the technologies that keep us connected. These pursuits not only promise a brighter, more informed future but continue a legacy that has seen British scientists like Newton, Darwin, and Hawking change the course of history. 🇬🇧💡 Let's use this week to not just celebrate achievements but also to raise crucial questions about our collective future. How can we ensure sustainable growth? In what ways can science education become more accessible? Dialogue kindled during British Science Week has the potential to lead to meaningful change. As we engage with science this week, remember that every question asked, every theory tested, brings us closer to understanding the world we share. I'd love to hear how science has impacted your life. Drop a comment below and let's spark a conversation! #BritishScienceWeek #STEM #Innovation

This year, British Science Week marks 30 years of bringing together people of all ages, who share a love for science, technology, engineering, and maths, and celebrating those with a career in the industry. As Head of UK Research at UCB, I am thrilled to join this celebration of British science and innovation. Science not only seeks to explain the world around us, but also helps us harness that knowledge for the benefit of humanity. Here at UCB, we are committed to pioneering approaches that improve health and deliver innovation. Therefore, it is apt that the theme of this year's British Science Week is 'Time'. Time plays a pivotal role in R&D. The journey from discovering a molecule, to that molecule being rigorously tested and eventually becoming a medicine available to patients, is inherently linked to the passage of time – this process can take over ten years! This R&D process requires innovative, creative thinkers. Therefore, it is vital that we equip the rising generation with the skills needed to critically question and explore the world and seek answers to society’s pressing problems. Our annual Work in Science Week provides students who have an interest in pursuing a career in STEM, with hands-on work experience in our labs in Slough. I've had the pleasure of meeting with and presenting to the students the past five years, sharing my career journey and the background behind the science we conduct here in our labs. Sharing my passion for science is genuinely one of the highlights of this job, and I am always impressed by the students’ ambition, curiosity, and eagerness to learn. The spirit of our Work in Science Week and British Science Week are aligned – encouraging us to acknowledge the dedication of our scientists, as well as inspiring the next generation of big thinkers who, in time, will generate the scientific achievements of tomorrow. I find it truly fascinating that the work we do is probing into the unknown and charting the previously unexplored and unexplained. Once you stop to think about how little we know about the complex universe we inhabit, you realise how incredibly important science is. #BSW24 #UCBUK

It's British Science Week! 👩🔬⚗️ British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths that will place between 8 - 17 March 2024! What do you imagine when you’re asked what a scientist looks like? Are you picturing lab coats, goggles, and conical flasks? How about the person? Are they a White man with grey hair, who resembles Albert Einstein? 🤔 If that’s who you pictured – you aren’t alone. But it’s something that needs to change. ‘Smashing Stereotypes‘ is a collection of over 40 stories from individuals and teams that challenge long-standing stereotypes, with the aim of encouraging more young people, from all backgrounds, to see themselves as scientists. With profiles of chefs, product designers, and fitness professionals, ‘Smashing Stereotypes‘ showcases how science is for everyone: whatever your interests, background, or career path! 👌 Take a look > https://ow.ly/RqK750QRXpG #BritishScienceWeek #Science #Technology #Engineering #Math #STEM #Careers

I dont usually write about international students, b/c there are so many out there who are much better experts in this area. But we couldn't resist theorizing about the role of time in 'international students' lives and trajectories that remains undertheorized, nor the opportunity to work with Adam Grimm, PhD and Jenna Mittelmeier. In this paper, we map some of the temporal intricacies underlying the complex emotional and spatial elements of international students’ lives, decisions, and trajectories, implicating research and practice. Hope you all find it intellectually stimulating. Thanks Jisun Jung for alerting and inviting me to submit something on this topic in the Higher Education Research and Development comment section!
