How you start impacts how you finish. #Leadership Lessons From The #Boat Today was the first time I’ve rowed in a few weeks! Travel, work, and life sometimes get in the way.  As summer race season approaches, we practiced what is called a “race start.”  It’s how you efficiently get a 60 ft rowing shell with eight people of all shapes and sizes from a dead stop to race pace in 10 strokes.   Imagine…. You wait…then hear… ATTENTION. ROW. 2 half strokes, 1 ¾ Stroke, 1 stroke to “lengthen”, 1 full stroke, then 5 strokes to settle to the race pace. Then, you swing a 12 ft oar into what’s called the pocket which is behind you and about the size of a legal envelope. You leverage about 200 lbs of pressure every stroke against the pressure of the water. If the timing is off, the boat is tippy which impacts speed. While not impossible, it’s hard to make up lost ground from the start. You have to practice the start. We drilled it over and over and over today. Each time was better than the one before. WHY IT MATTERS: You can’t win the race with a good start, but a bad start can lose the race. #rowing DALLAS UNITED CREW #starting #finishing Thanks for the video Amber Robidou
