Running sucks, run clubs suck less 🏃♂️ As I enter the final year of my twenties, the shared, unexplainable desire to start running outside in uncomfortable synthetic clothing has grown and grown 🧐 Two years ago, if you told me I would be getting out of bed at 6 am to run 5K in the rain before work I would have laughed and gone back to sleep, but here I am... 😤 It's not easy, and it's not fun, but it's a hell of a lot easier when you're surrounded by other people going through the same thing 🏃♂️🏃♀️🏃 Run clubs are popular for a reason ➡️ Shared pain is easier to handle because it's validated. You build a sense of solidarity which leads to perspective, and subsequently, motivation to persevere (that was a mouthful) 🫶 I think I speak for alot of people when I say my automatic response to something I'm struggling with is to try and handle it on my own - what I'm learning is that struggles are best shared. 5 sneaky ways to get exercise without thinking about it: 1 - Get a standing desk. For every 45 minutes of sitting stand up for at least 15 seconds. 2 - Doorway pull-ups Put a pull-up bar in a door your frequently open. Before crossing the door do at least once pull up. 3 - Walking meetings Make every meeting a walking meeting. Here’s a cue, routine, reward breakdown for running in the morning… Leave your running shoes and clothes out the night before (Cue): As soon as you wake up you will see your running shoes and your mind will focus on going for a run.   Going for a run (Routine): This is the behavior. When you see your running attire, you go out for a run.   Feeling good (Reward): The reward is the benefit gained from doing the behavior. About a year ago, a friend/mentor suggested to me that I try pickleball. Of course, I didn't want to. For anything new that was out of my comfort zone, I had to be dragged kicking and screaming (not really, but you understand). My friend lent me a paddle, and we set off for my first foray into what would become a healthy obsession (probably borderline unhealthy, lol). We got to the gym about 15 minutes early, and he taught me the rules and how to keep score. That was it. I learned the rest as I went from really nice, welcoming, fun people. Ever since, I have been playing pickleball as much as possible (weekly, when I am not travelling). If you haven't given #pickleball a shot yet, you should. It's great for all ages (especially seniors, who love it), fun, social, and growing in popularity. Oh, and because of all those reasons and more, it's actually quite healthy for both the body and mind. And since it's fun to play, you don't have to psyche yourself up to go (like the gym or running). 21 weeks ago, I hated running. So I started a running program. Everyone who runs LOVES running. I wanted to figure out why some people got such joy out of something I found excruciating. What was I missing? I sought the advice of a seasoned runner, purchased their app, laced up my sneakers, and began the "Zone 2 adaptation" process. Step one to becoming a runner. 21 weeks later, I can't say I love running. But I no longer hate it. Some days, sticking to "Zone 2" sucks my will to live. But I can run 1.25 miles and keep my heart rate steady. And seeing "striders" as part of my workout one day a week brings unimaginable joy. (Who am I, even!??!!) 3 days a week for 21 weeks, I've shown up and run. There were days when I didn't feel like it; days when I was under the weather; days when I was sucking wind in Zone 2; days when 20 minutes felt like 20 hours. But with tenacity, I experienced days when a mile run felt easy. (Dare I say, it even felt good!) My V02 max is creeping up after plummeting from a bout of COVID. Why TF am I posting this on LinkedIn? Because if you work in PR you need tenacity. Successful pitching is hard. Managing expectations is hard. Landing the holy grail publication feels Sisyphean. My thrice weekly runs remind me that I have the tenacity to do hard things. So I show up again and again and again. Because now I can run a mile.
