Shipwrecks, sea birds and whales: the exploration of Ireland’s first marine park. In an enchanting article, I read this evening of the Kerry Seas national park (Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara, Ciarraí) encompasses 70,000 acres of precious marine and coastal habitats off Ireland’s gorgeous Kerry coast. It embraces numerous sites of rich cultural heritage and outstanding biodiversity. The latter includes internationally important seabird populations, plus everything from basking sharks and sunfish to dolphins and whales. Ireland’s south and west coasts have now gained a reputation as a top whale-watching location, with both minke and fin whales regularly seen in summer, and autumn being peak season for humpbacks. The beehive cells of the ruined monastery echo the rugged island outline of Little Skellig. These buildings – strange windowless stone cells – are known as the beehive hut, or clochán – 1,400 years ago, they offered sleeping quarters to monks. There are many wonders on this coast, and this article transports me with joy, and a desire to travel to Ireland, that I have never visited. Inspiration beyond words. As the thermometer stubbornly lingered below freezing, it fuelled my desire to remind myself of warmer times. Our October trip to Pembrokeshire was unseasonably warm, which resulted in beach adventures and newly discovered locations. 🌅 Nestled at the mouth of the Teifi Estuary, Poppit Sands Beach is a perfect example of our explorations. At high tide, the sandy expanse is a picturesque haven, but low tide reveals a breathtaking stretch of sand that seems to reach almost Gwbert on the other side. However, watch the tide, especially when it's coming in – it moves fast! ⏰ Poppit Sands marks the beginning (or end) of the epic 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path, an incredible journey that takes you along the entire coastline to Amroth in the south. If you are an avid walker, then lace up your hiking boots and embark on a coastal adventure like no other! 🥾 With the sheltered cove providing respite from the prevailing southwesterly winds it creates an ideal environment for wildlife watching.
