FIS Council: airbags are mandatory for Downhill and Super-G athletes as of 2024/25 The Council convened for an online session this Friday and confirmed that the use of airbags will be mandatory for all athletes competing in the speed disciplines of Alpine Skiing at a FIS World Cup level as of this 2024/25 season. Exceptions can be granted by the National Ski Association in the event that the airbag does not fit an athlete, such that the airbag restricts movement in an unsafe manner. 🗣️ “For FIS, athlete safety comes first and is non-negotiable. The adoption of airbags is part of a broader approach that involves all the factors that can minimize the risk of serious injuries: from the knowledge around weather conditions and track set-up to equipment such as cut-resistant undergarment and smart bindings. Snow sports, like skiing or snowboarding are highly demanding on the body. It is cold and you are out working hard for many hours, stressing your body which it may not be accustomed to. Sport is a great way to have fun and get fit, as well as improve your confidence and mental health. It can be a fun way to be part of a community and enjoy yourselves. Wheelchair Curling 🥌 While using the same ice and curling rock as any other variant of the sport, wheelchair curling is played stationary with no sweeping. So, players will have to rely on their strength and precision, sending the rock as close to the button as they can while knocking out the opponent’s rocks. Adaptive Skiing ⛷️ Skiing is a thrilling sport, played in the snowy mountains or at a specialised venue more locally available. For those with SCI, you can participate using specially made adaptive skis that work as seats attached to a single, or mono, ski as well as sticks that act as their own ski for manoeuvrability. Alternatively, a separate skier standing upright can control your descent from behind, perfect for beginners. Sledge Hockey 🏒 Similar to the adaptive mono ski, players are seated close to the ice atop a double-bladed sledge with two sticks. This up-close and competitive sport faces off two teams trying to score the puck into the net. And much like skiing, remember to wear your gear and helmet.
