Our offices are closed today in observance of #Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, with news of freedom. More than 250,000 African Americans embraced freedom by executive decree in what became known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day. In 1866, freedmen in Texas organized the first of what became the annual celebration of "Jubilee Day" on June 19. Over time, the celebration spread, and in 1979, Juneteenth became an official state holiday in Texas. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this day off to participate in local Juneteenth events and educate yourselves on its historical significance. This is an opportunity for us to learn, grow, and celebrate the progress we have made while recognizing the work that still lies ahead.
