Banner Witcoff DIFFERENT I am jaded. Nineteen years in Big Law will make you that way. I didn’t know what to expect regarding an all lawyer retreat having only been used to All Partner retreats - which I hated. And many others hated. Politics and glad-handing are things I do not do well, and frankly find counterproductive to running a business. Yet, the “retreat” was unexpectedly and positively different, although it was still in Florida (can we have a retreat involving snow?) Why different? 1. I watched people state hard truths in an open forum. 2. I watched the associates help run events and committees during the meeting. 3. I watched team building occur and even had fun. 4. I stated some things that I perceive to be hard truths in an open forum and felt listened to. 5. I collaborated with Christian LaForgia to put together an AI/healthcare/privacy group. 6. I have watched Joe Berghammer start a What’s Up group in Litigation. 7. I watched groups of people take walks up and down the beach together in combinations that made me think - wow that’s cool. 8. I had people worry as to whether I was having fun (despite my anxiety). Yes, I still suffered from #SocialAnxiety especially given past partner retreat PTSD. Despite being in Florida in 90% humidity, I valued Banner Witcoff and its culture more after our gathering than I even did before. #LawyerRetreat #LawFirm
