President of ASH+LIME, Downtown/neighborhood planner, public speaker, city coach. Strong Towns Founders Circle. Ask me about Third Places.
This is one of many examples of how #ThirdPlaces can be especially important to vulnerable individuals. People recovering from addiction need spaces where they can fulfill their social needs without the risk of triggering their addiction. Many alcoholics, for instance, have established social patterns around bars. Losing access to these environments can lead to deep social isolation. When the basic human need for connection arises, the temptation to return to the bar—and to the addiction—can be overwhelming. Having alternative spaces that meet social needs without the pressure to drink can literally be a matter of life and death. Reflecting on this, I remember meeting many recovering alcoholics who spent their free time in vibrant, late-night coffeehouses where people socialized for hours. These coffeehouses served the same basic social functions as bars, but without the alcohol. Now that such places are long gone, I wonder how their absence affects those in recovery.
