We are in the midst of a historic, alarming increase in the number of people struck and killed by vehicles while walking on our city streets. This trend has been on a steady rise since 2009, reaching levels not seen in more than 30 years. But there’s a way to make our streets safer for everyone: Complete Streets policies. From Pittsburgh, PA to Milwaukee, WI, local leaders and advocates are standing up for pedestrians’ rights to get where they need to go without risking their lives. Explore our new interactive StoryMap, developed in partnership with Smart Growth America, to learn why we need Complete Streets—and how they’re achievable through local policy. https://lnkd.in/e6eMmDUg #CompleteStreets #PedestrianSafety #Walkability

At Pensacola Habitat, we know that safe, decent housing is the key to better health, education, financial opportunity and much more. The historical practice of redlining, which has been used to keep neighborhoods of color from attaining the same wealth and economic opportunities as White neighborhoods, goes against what we stand for. Consider how you can help us and other community organizations invest in building these underserved communities up and establishing fair and equitable opportunities for all. Can local policy decisions that have nothing to do with medical care really have an impact on the health of residents? The simple answer is yes. And the simple example is...sidewalks. "Researchers found that neighborhoods equipped with markers of urban development like sidewalks and crosswalks were linked to reductions in obesity and high blood pressure." Health-promoting local policies can help create the conditions for healthy communities and help those who face the most barriers to good health. Improving #HealthNotJustHealthCare in Texas isn't always easy, but it takes commitment from many different parts of the community. And it can start with something as simple as sidewalks... #healthequity #NMDOH #SDOH #philanthropy https://lnkd.in/gVVHHaVw

Several months ago, I was one of many interviewed as part of the Milken Institute research on #affordablehousing and #olderadults. As their report shares, the demand for affordable senior housing and care will only increase as the US population ages. Their Milken Institute report identifies the barriers to access and showcases the potential paths forward to change the landscape of senior housing and care. https://lnkd.in/ecyYq8aA #seniorlivingdesign
