CEO/Co-founder of BillionMinds (Techstars 2024) and host of Humanity Working Podcast - I help create adaptable, resilient workforces ready for the future of work, and I love really old movies.
Interesting article (I was briefly interviewed for it). This is basically taking something lots of employers want (RTO) and exchanging it for something employees would value (a four-day week). It can work as long as the five-day week is the norm and so this is perceived as a benefit. However, as I mentioned in the article, it doesn't change the fact that there is scant evidence that RTO is useful or effective.
Getting staff to want to work in offices again with their teams is still a challenge for employers. Newly designed office spaces, free food and other perks are just some of the ways they’ve tried to incentivize staff to return and make it worth their while. But one company is giving staff the ultimate reward for coming back when it wants them to — a day of #PTO. At Envoy, a workforce solutions software firm with about 250 employees across six offices, teams are required to be in the office the same three days a week. If everyone on the team meets those requirements, that team gets an entire Friday off the next month. #RTO #returntooffice In this piece by Hailey Mensik, we speak to Jacqueline (Greenberg) Sharma, SHRM-SCP, and Paul Slater of BillionMinds.

Longer commutes chip away at employee morale and job satisfaction. In Metro Atlanta, where drivers lose on average 75 hours a year stuck in traffic, as many as 6 in 10 employees say their commute is the reason they’re unwilling to return to the workplace. Offering a great commuter benefits program—one that supports transit, rideshare and active commuting—can change outcomes for you and your teams. Learn how: https://lnkd.in/et9FKHqZ

Navigating holidays and paid time off (PTO) for international remote teams can be a complex task due to differing public holidays across countries 🌎. However, a few best practices can help create a fair and inclusive policy. 1️⃣ Recognize Holidays: Establish a global set of holidays 📅 for your entire team and also acknowledge local holidays specific to each country. At SharkHelpers, we adhere to local Colombian regulations and accommodate our employees by observing local holidays whenever possible. 2️⃣ Document and Communicate: Make your holiday policy clear and accessible to all team members 📋. Regularly communicate the holiday schedule to ensure transparency. 3️⃣ Support Time Off: Encourage your remote workers to take holidays off, emphasizing the importance of work-life balance ⚖️. At SharkHelpers, we provide 15 days of PTO per year for our Colombian employees, ensuring they feel comfortable requesting time off 🏖️. 4️⃣ Research Local Rules: Different countries have varying labor laws regarding holidays and Paid Time Off (PTO). Do your research or consult a local partner to ensure compliance. At SharkHelpers, we ensure compliance with local regulations, and these benefits are included in our fees. Remember, flexibility, cultural awareness, and fairness are key when managing holidays for an international remote team. Creating a positive work environment that respects diverse traditions allows team members to recharge and celebrate 🎊.

I help teams maximize results by improving systems to hire, manage, develop, and retain top performers in your championship culture.
The Wall Street Journal reports remote employees are vacationing on the clock - https://lnkd.in/g2eqczjN WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? #1 - Have clear policies about work hours. Support flexible hours, but make it clear in-writing (with employee signature?) the specific hours each person is to work and how to notify plus receive approval for time off during regular work hours. Track missed time and the time worked to make up for it. #2 - Carefully monitor or be alert to time worked, ideally without an app. #3 - Be a role model for the behavior you demand of other team members. #4 - Write-up someone if they violate policy, put them on a PIP, or immediately fire them. Untrustworthy people bring down a team. #5 - After you implement a solid system and train your team on it, then you get what you tolerate.
It’s the Summer of the Quiet Vacation. Don’t Tell the Boss.

Are you aware that Quiet Vacationing, also known as taking time off without explicitly announcing it or making it known to the wider workplace, has become a trend among many millennials and Gen Z employees? This trend is influenced by these 3 factors: 1. Workplace Culture and Expectations: -Always-On Culture: Many workplaces have an "always-on" culture, where employees feel the need to be constantly available and responsive. This is especially prevalent in industries that heavily rely on digital communication and remote work. As a result, employees may feel pressured to stay connected even when they are on vacation. -Fear of Judgment: Younger employees might worry about being judged negatively for taking time off, especially in highly competitive environments. They may fear that taking PTO could be seen as a lack of dedication or ambition. 2. Technological Advancements: -Ubiquity of Technology: The widespread availability of smartphones, laptops, and internet connectivity makes it easy for employees to stay connected to work, even while on vacation. This can lead to a situation where employees feel compelled to check emails and handle work tasks, blurring the lines between work and personal time. -Remote Work Normalization: The normalization of remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic has further blurred these boundaries, making it more difficult for employees to fully disconnect. 3. Productivity and Performance Pressure: -High Performance Standards: Millennials and Gen Z employees often face high performance standards and may feel that they need to constantly prove their productivity and value to their employers. -Fear of Falling Behind: The fast pace of many modern workplaces can make employees worry about falling behind on tasks or missing out on important developments if they take time off. This can lead to a reluctance to take extended breaks. Ready to hire? 🚀 Introducing Quiet Vacationing: A New Trend in Remote Work? 🚀 As the founder of an outsourcing agency, I'm always on the lookout for trends shaping the future of work. One intriguing phenomenon I've come across is "quiet vacationing." This is where remote workers take unofficial time off without notifying their employers, maintaining an appearance of being online through clever tactics. Why is this happening? Many younger workers, particularly millennials and Gen Z, feel overworked and underappreciated. They seek to balance personal time and professional responsibilities without the risk of seeming unproductive. Techniques like moving the mouse periodically or scheduling after-hours emails are commonly used to maintain this facade. Understanding these trends helps us create better work environments that respect work-life balance and reduce burnout. Let's strive for a culture where taking time off is normalized and supported. Personally I’ve seen this since the boarders were opened after COVID, for me is not new, but probably other Companies are just finding out about this. Let me know what do you think about this! #RemoteWork #WorkLifeBalance #QuietVacationing #FutureOfWork #Outsourcing #EmployeeWellbeing

When recruiters hit a dead end, I find them unicorns and purple squirrels. - Senior Talent Sourcing Consultant - Talent Attractions & Pipeline
Are you guilty of working through your PTO and days off? I use to do the same, but many years ago I made a change and when I’m out of office, I completely disconnect and It’s amazing how refreshed I feel when I come back to work. Last week I put my out of office on my LinkedIn and email and despite coming back to a couple of dozen LinkedIn messages (I promise I’ll get back to you all) and several hundred emails the value of disconnecting from it all for a week can’t be underestimated. Whether you are job searching or working, taking time away to recharge your batteries can often times do more for your performance and motivation than anything else. #worklifebalance #rechargeyourself #pto
