I recently wrote for the 2weeks newsletter about why we think the web is primed for a second wave of great games. The newsletter article primarily focuses on the technology convergence that's happening, making it newly possible to build games that are competitive with games on traditional platforms. One important dimension I didn't touch on in the newsletter is the importance of the open nature of the web. Gaming is a huge business, but all of the major distribution platforms are closed platforms that take substantial cuts of revenue. When digital distribution platforms first started taking off, the 30% fee most platforms charge seemed like a steal, especially in comparison to the "cost of goods sold" from having to manufacture and distribute physical games, and because these new digital storefronts were new markets where it was easy to break out if you had a great game. These days, digital distribution is the norm, with 70% of all games purchases happening online. Every digital platform has become hugely overcrowded. More than 14,000 games shipped on Steam last year, and the percentage of games that meet some baseline level of success has fallen every year since 2019 (as measured by the number of games that graduate from "Profile Features Limited" according to SteamDB, which requires hitting nominal sales and engagement metrics). It's harder to rise above the noise than ever. This isn't an immediate problem for the digital platform owners - individual developers may be seeing their slice of the revenue pie shrink, but overall platform revenues are still continuing to grow. On top of that, digital distribution costs have plummeted. The 30% share is increasingly sweet for platform owners (and increasingly bitter for developers). The web doesn't magically solve the distribution challenges of connecting with an audience, but it does give you the opportunity to build a direct relationship with your audience.
