What are the implications of eliminating minimum parking requirements for all land uses in the city of Vancouver? And, in tandem with this move, the implementation of permit and meter parking across the city? This goes way beyond Provincial requirements related to parking in transit-oriented areas. Yet another example of a major policy initiative under consideration by Council (just before its summer recess) with virtually zero engagement with the public.

🚗 Think beyond the meter! Paid parking is more than just a way to make money. It's a powerful tool to: ✅ Reduce traffic congestion - Encourage people to choose walking, cycling, or public transit, creating smoother commutes for everyone. ✅ Fund essential city services - Revenue from parking can improve roads, parks, and public transport, making your city a better place to live. ✅ Promote sustainable development - Encourage mixed-use buildings and walkable neighborhoods, reducing our reliance on cars. ✅ Create a more equitable city - Invest in projects that benefit everyone, not just drivers. It was great to talk about the need for parking reform and more paid parking in Australian cities for this piece on ABC News by Kieron Byatt, also featuring parking experts Donald Shoup & David Mepham. It not only features a fascinating historical look at the development of parking meters in the US and reactions in Australia (and some great cartoons/photos!), but some views on how we might consider implementing more paid parking approaches, despite political challenges. That said, expanding from the focus of this article, we must also remember paying for street parking isn't the only thing we need to do in Australian cities - we also need to strategically remove more street parking, particularly where it is in conflict with the kinds of street space reallocation that allow us to create quality, safe infrastructure for active transport. https://lnkd.in/gqMtDyJf

🚗 Must-Know Changes to Parking Rules: Positive Reforms for Motorists As a member of the International Parking Community (IPC) and the steering committee for the new Parking Code, I am excited to share the upcoming changes in parking regulations. These changes, developed in collaboration with the British Parking Association (BPA), aim to simplify parking rules, making them more equitable and transparent for everyone involved. Why This Matters Starting from June 2024, these changes will begin to take effect, with full implementation by January 2026. Although the public might not see immediate changes, these reforms are designed to enhance fairness and clarity in parking management across the UK. Here are the top 5 changes from the new Single Code of Practice: Enhanced Signage Entry signage will now meet stricter criteria, with text height adjusted according to road entry speed. This ensures that parking conditions are clearly communicated from the moment you enter a parking facility. Clearer Language Signs will explicitly state conditions like “Permit Holders Only” or “Pay and Display,” eliminating vague messages such as “Parking Conditions Apply.” This helps motorists understand exactly what is required. Appeals Charter A new consistent Appeals Framework will be introduced, providing a fair process for motorists to appeal parking charges. This framework ensures that all appeals are handled with transparency and consideration of mitigating circumstances. Fairer For Motorists The new rules mandate a 10-minute grace period for motorists and a no-charge policy for minor key-in errors at Pay and Display sites. This reduces unnecessary penalties and offers a more forgiving system for common mistakes. Uniformity Of Rules A single set of clear rules for private land parking operators will promote consistency and transparency. This standardised approach ensures that parking rules are fair and easily understood, no matter where you park. The Road Ahead These changes reflect our commitment to protecting shared values, rights, and environments enjoyed by society. By balancing engagement, education, and enforcement, we aim to bring about positive behavioural change that benefits everyone. I believe that these reforms will make a significant impact, reducing confusion and unnecessary charges for motorists while ensuring a fair and consistent parking experience across the UK. This initiative is part of our broader mission to support local communities and enhance the quality of life through fair and effective parking management.
