Here are 5 ways in which #PlantVarietyProtection is suited for SMEs: 1. Protected varieties can be freely used for breeding (the “Breeders’ exception”) 2. A simple and harmonized application system with model forms and UPOV PRISMA online application tool 3. Cost efficient system of variety examination 4. Licensing opportunities for the production and marketing of plant varieties 5. Partnerships can be formed between farmers and growers associations, seed producers and/or processors can join ranks to assist in the financing of a breeding program and enable the multiplication and marketing of the resulting varieties www.upov.int

FONTANE Malting Barley The breeder of FONTANE spring barley, Lene Krusell from Sejet Plant Breeding, along with Director Birger Eriksen and Head of Marketing Ole Andersen, expresses great joy after receiving good news from the Czech Republic, where the FONTANE variety has received top ratings for malting quality. Quality: FONTANE is a semi-fast modification variety with low to medium-low levels of beta-glucan, high extract yields, and high diastatic power. FONTANE is being tested in various malting programs, including the Danish industry program "Danish Preferred." Yield: FONTANE has shown outstanding yield results, highlighting its potential as a highly promising pan-European variety. It has delivered absolute top yields across Europe and ranked no. 1 in six countries! This is a significant achievement and contributes to the variety’s strong climate profile. Resistance & Agronomy: FONTANE demonstrates excellent and broad disease resistance, including a uniquely high level of resistance to barley rust. Additionally, FONTANE shows strong resistance to lodging and straw breaking.

Ohalo has just announced the groundbreaking discovery of Boosted Breeding, a revolutionary plant breeding technology that is set to transform agriculture and enhance crop productivity sustainably. This innovative system can produce plants with increased health, growth, and overall yield gains of a remarkable 50-100%+ in early trials. These outcomes hold great promise for farmers and consumers alike. Boosted Breeding introduces a new approach to plant breeding, allowing each parent plant to pass its entire genome to its offspring. This means that offspring plants inherit all the beneficial traits of both parents right from the start, resulting in an unprecedented improvement in crops. This breakthrough technology has the potential to significantly impact agriculture's ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions and boost crop productivity. With Boosted Breeding, combining beneficial traits becomes easier and faster, eliminating the lengthy and arduous process typically associated with traditional plant breeding methods. Also, Boosted Breeding unlocks the potential for scalable seed-based planting systems in crops that are currently propagated vegetatively. This not only reduces disease risk but also minimizes the cost and time associated with vegetative propagation. It opens up new possibilities for seed industries in crops that were previously not planted from true seed, such as potatoes. While this discovery is incredibly exciting, it is important to approach it with some level of caution. As with any new technology, further research and testing are necessary to fully understand its long-term impacts and potential limitations. However, the initial results and possibilities presented by Boosted Breeding are undeniably promising. Ohalo's dedication to research and innovation in plant reproductive biology has led to this game-changing technology. They are actively implementing Boosted Breeding across various crops and forging partnerships with industry leaders to expedite its adoption. The future of agriculture is being reshaped, and Ohalo is at the forefront of this transformative journey. www.terrypaule.com www.wegrowwater.com #BoostedBreeding #AgricultureInnovation #SustainableAgriculture #CropProductivity #PlantBreeding #OhaloGenetics #RevolutionaryTechnology #FeedingTheFuture #Terrypaule

What to do with an unwanted good idea - in plant breeding ? This very special line of melons popped up in one of my breeding populations this year. What’s so special about it? 👉it has a very thin and soft skin. (Maybe like an apple) You can eat the melon 🍈 with its skin! Most plant breeders know exactly what they want ! They have a clearly defined list of criteria for their future new variety. I try to do things differently and stay open to unexpected findings. You never know what comes up in this game of genetic roulette. So this melon peaked my curiosity. What’s the potential of this plant and line? 👉 a melon that can be eaten with its skin! 🍈 For me that would be great! However there are also problems…🙄 I am breeding melons for outdoor cultivation in Central Europe. And a thin skin is a deal breaker. You get just too many „non marketable fruits“. Melons rot, get bruised or split… So for now I won’t continue this line… it just doesn’t work for my conditions. But the idea stays. Maybe it’s worth developing for greenhouse production one day? What do you think? 🤔 Is a melon with thin edible skin interesting or rather not?
