A Productive September at AVBC! September was packed with activities, and we are excited to share some key highlights: We held a training session on cross-breeding and hybrid production, empowering African seed companies with advanced techniques that will shape the future of vegetable production on the continent. Our training was a true team effort: Assaf Eybishitz demonstrated advanced techniques for tomato breeding. Derek Barchenger led sessions on pepper breeding. For many participants, this was their first exposure to the GMS (Genetic Male Sterility) and CMS (Cytoplasmic Male Sterility) , available for their breeding programs. Mathieu Ayenan showcased good practices in okra cross-breeding. Anthimos Kampouridis introduced breeding techniques for pumpkin. favi vidavski provided valuable insights into the economic aspects of breeding, while Yarou Boni and Lys Amavi AGLINGLO focused on seed production, ensuring participants gained practical knowledge for improving seed quality. To get a better view of the activities, I'm attaching videos showcasing the hands-on training. Our goal at World Vegetable Center is to equip African seed companies with the tools and knowledge to stay ahead, and this event is just the beginning. We’re excited about the future and look forward to seeing how these companies apply what they’ve learned to bring more innovative and diverse varieties to the market. Modernizing crop breeding in Nigeria to meet market demand "This demand-led approach contrasts with the traditional method, where breeders solely determine desirable traits. By consulting stakeholders across the value chain—farmers, seed producers, transporters, processors, marketers, and consumers—at the initial stages, the breeding process aims to define and develop varieties that align with market needs and stakeholder expectations."
