The violence of the past few days has been disturbing and intimidating often fuelled by inflammatory language from those who should know better. There are a lot of angry people in the UK and there are also far too many impoverished and dispossessed communities for a nation with so much wealth and resources. The power of food to connect, to heal and to bridge divides is well documented. It’s not the answer to what we have seen on our streets recently but it can be part of the answer. Something as simple as a shared meal may not make people agree with each other but it can stop them wanting to harm each other. Sustainable Food Places connects communities in over 100 localities across the UK by tackling food poverty, ensuring food justice, cooking, growing, supporting local food businesses and simply sharing good food together. Food can connect where economic injustice, misinformation and hopelessness is seeking to divide. See the impact Sustainable Food Places network, family and movement. Whoever you are in these cities – take a breath, take a look at this work and look to what makes us all human – the love of good food. Below are just three of many, many examples… In Hull ‘Scran! Kitchen’ at the Warren is a young people’s resource centre based in the centre of Hull. It has a strong philosophy of youth empowerment and democracy. Scran! provides training and support around cooking, growing and eating better food. https://lnkd.in/dfmr-d2z Rotherham Food Network is an inspirational example of how local communities, businesses and the Council can work together to make affordable good food a defining characteristic of that city. https://lnkd.in/debmPBUW Food Plymouth’s has its FoodSEqual project that ensures everyone in the community can eat well with summer holidays offers for families and breakfast meet-ups for all. https://lnkd.in/dc_-PCyZ https://lnkd.in/dXHCWJQh

Wow - glad the Houston Landing wrote about this survey data. Students who are hungry WILL NOT learn. Few key takeaways for me: (1) 10 campuses with only vending machines is just sad and definitely not conducive to student learning. (2) Food truck idea from Sean Cheben is very smart. (3) Why not partner with Houston Food Bank? (4) What if HCC offered leases to Chipotle Mexican Grill or other restaurants? Wonder if there would be demand? Not sure the best solution, but Houston Community College must address this challenge. https://lnkd.in/ewNsM6Hj

There are only 8 days left to participate in the CU Food Fight! Supporting campus food pantries does not just help students to eat a meal, it is part of a much larger picture that our country is facing food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined by the US Department of Agriculture as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active & healthy lifestyle. This crisis significantly affects college students across America and is a real issue many today have to face. We all know college kids are known for eating ramen noodles, and heck, we have all likely been there too! But this is something we now have the power and knowledge to change. Food insecurity can end up affecting students' studies, relationships, habits, and routines while in school, and can even have lasting effects post-grad. The real reason these students are here is to learn, so let's help them persevere through their studies without worrying about what they will eat for dinner. Just visit https://brnw.ch/21wP0hC to support Clyde's Cupboard at UCCS and fight hunger! #UCCSAlumni #CUFoodFight
