Good news is always a harder sell. But how come this video interview flew on Instagram and went slower on other social media? Do you think we should we be paying Linkedin and Facebook for a higher profile for our news stories? Advice / tips welcome. Here's the story itself - Wondering what to do on your day off? Why not volunteer like Robbie Connaughton from Barber Bobs in Athlone? He drives up to Dublin on days off to offer homeless people a haircut. (FULL VIDEO - 3 mins 26 secs HERE: https://lnkd.in/g2eKkb5N) We interviewed Robbie on Monday (April 29) while he was cutting hair in the rain on Mount Street. His customer Hannan spoke only to say that he had no English. Regardless of how people end up here, Robbie said it is not right for anyone to have to live on the streets: “It’s a very poor reflection on our country that we allow human beings to come into our country and they’re going to be living on the street. "Leinster House isn’t too far away and I don’t know how they’re comfortable with hundreds of them homeless,” he said. It was as if the politicians were listening to Robbie. Yesterday, the asylum-seekers living in over 200 tents on Mount Street were bussed to accommodation sites that provide showers, toilet facilities, food and other supports. Taoiseach Simon Harris admitted, "The situation had become completely unacceptable” and he thanked the various state agencies involved. Robbie is one of many volunteers who do their best to help people in vulnerable situations. You can go DIY like Robbie, or see what's up and join a volunteer event or group through Volunteer Ireland. #compassion #volunteer #volunteerbarber #humanity #solidarity #peoplearepeople

It's International Men's Day today. A day where men are encouraged to celebrate their achievements and contributions as well as to acknowledge and discuss concerns and issues affecting men. These can range from domestic, and social to health and welfare issues. Did you know that: - 3 out of 4 suicides are men - 2 out of 3 violent deaths are men - Men die 6 years younger than women on average - Boys underperform girls at every stage of education - Dads who want to be more involved in their children's lives face a range of barriers - Men tend to be more likely to experience homelessness - Men are more vulnerable to major life-threatening chronic diseases That's food for thought.... "How can I help?"💬 We get this question a lot when we share the struggles children and young people face when they move in care. Especially when they are made to move with their belongings in bin bags.🎒 There are a couple of things you can do: 1️⃣ Check our website and see if your local authority has signed up. If they haven't you can write a letter to your local MP to ask them to sign the #MyThingsMatter pledge. We have a handy template you can download. 2️⃣ You can also purchase a bag from Madlug™, who in turn will gift a pack-away travel bag to a young person in care. 3️⃣ Keep sharing! The more people that see our campaign, the more change we will see.

this year has been so enormous. grassroots organising is nothing like other kinds of advocacy. we all work for free. we borrow money off each other week to week to get by. nobody is left behind. we take care of each other's kids like they're our kids because really they are. there's no ceremony to stand on. we buy each other Christmas gifts from op shops. we buy our kids Christmas gifts from op shops. our kids joke about mailing Bill Shorten a lump of coal for Christmas. we worry about those of us who are at heightened risk of s**cide because its always higher at Christmas because their kids are in out of home care. some are apart from their babies for their first Christmas; babies removed a few months ago at birth. because there's not enough support. we plan protests for the new year. we figure out who will be here and how we will support those with physical access needs and medical needs and we share photos of the 504 and we dream of accountability and real action and real change. as they say in blade runner: we want more life (fill in the blank). this year has been so much. we are glad the cracks in the NDIA are showing. we are glad their executives are under the miscroscope. we are glad because maybe it means they can be stopped. we are glad to see a class action filed against DCJ NSW for removals of First Nations children. we are glad to hear this same action is getting up in other states. about time. we hope real support and real inclusion and real justice comes soon enough for many. justice is not a box you tick so you can say you consulted. justice is you giving up power and sharing it. justice is you sharing access and wealth and safety. justice is you acknowledging we are just as human as you. our kids, just as human as your kids. #Forward #DisabilityJustice #WorkHardShowUpGetShitDone #CommunityCare #MutualAid #TheANPA

How commodification of children in care and the pursuit of profit harms young people and families: 70% of children’s homes across the county of Lancashire are currently not caring for Lancashire children. And just 16% of beds in homes run by agencies are used for Lancashire children. https://lnkd.in/e7tf6K9z
