In the chocolate industry, there are multiple ways of sourcing cacao. However, some of these ways are better than others. We've always been open about the fact that our cacao is sourced directly from farmers who are paid a fair wage. It's a fact that we're proud of, & a process that we will continue for as long as Living Lotus is making bean to bar chocolate (this will be for a long, long time!) In an effort to support transparent trade, we want to tell you more: When chocolate companies get their cacao directly sourced, the cacao typically has one middleman. It looks like this: Cacao farmers -> Exporter -> Us We get our cacao using this method for one reason = It's Ethical. Plain & simple, this allows cacao farmers to receive their fair share of the cost. With commercial chocolate companies, the conventional model of sourcing cacao looks like this: Farmer -> Local Buyer -> Exporter -> Importer -> Chocolate Company In this stream, the cacao is grown for quantity & not flavour. This commodity (low quality) cacao is purchased at a low price, & every middleman takes their cut. This leaves the original cacao farmer with little earnings to show for their work. This profit-driven process is unethical & often slave & child labour are used to harvest the cacao bean as a result. This is why you see such a great divide in pricing for your chocolate bars. The best thing that you can do, is ask your favourite chocolate makers where they source their cacao from. And then keep asking. We are chocolate makers passionate about ethical sourcing. That's why direct-source cacao is the only way for us! 🙌 [Alt text: a pile of brown cacao beans with a crackled appearance lay on a wooden table.]

The Quest for Genuine Cocoa: How We Help Buyers Find Reliable Suppliers In the bustling global market for cocoa, not all suppliers are what they seem. For years, buyers like Maria, a procurement manager for a major European chocolate company, struggled to find genuine, reliable cocoa suppliers. Maria's company demanded nothing less than the finest cocoa beans, sustainably sourced and ethically traded. She needed a solution—fast. That’s when Maria discovered our cocoa sourcing service. Every connection came with a seal of assurance: no more guesswork, no more middlemen with hidden agendas. Within weeks, Maria had access to samples of premium-quality cocoa that met her company's exacting standards. She confidently presented the beans to her board, along with traceability reports and sustainability certifications, knowing she had finally found reliable partners. Today, Maria no longer dreads the sourcing season. Her company enjoys a steady supply of high-quality cocoa, and Maria is celebrated for finding a solution that not only secures great beans but also supports ethical trade practices. "Chocolate-makers cannot produce chocolate using raw cocoa and rely on processors to turn beans into butter and liquor that can be made into chocolate. But the processors say they cannot afford to buy the beans." If anyone's been wanting to swear off sweets, now might be a good time. Several years of poor harvest has resulted in soaring cocoa bean prices and production shortages. Consumers pay the ultimate price, with chocolate prices up 11.6% since 2022. I'll be curious to see how the industry responds - I'm anticipating attempts to diversify cocoa bean suppliers or an increased use of forecasting technology across the chocolate sector. https://lnkd.in/gBBgshfV

Chocolate producers like Hershey are grappling with the high costs of cocoa, and consumers are feeling the impact. According to a CoBank report last week, cocoa prices are at a 46-year high, roughly 65% higher than they were just a year ago. And prices are expected to stay high until a new growth season begins later this year. As producers deal with the cocoa conundrum, Matthew Spooner of Kinaxis believes they may experiment with new product formulations, product sizes or ingredients to get around raising their prices too high. “Maybe by reducing the actual size of the bars of chocolate, what the consumer sees is mitigated a bit, so you’re not seeing that the price of cocoa for the producer is up fifty-percent,” Spooner said. Valued Client: Yo Nanya, I wanna source premium quality cocoa so I'm gonna be sending you into the 'bush'... Me: Hold up. I need a good laugh on this... 😂😂😂 First of, sourcing cocoa beans is not a walk in the park. It goes beyond walking into the farms and heaping the truck with beans. The quality is very important. Chocolate is one of the world's most cherished treats, enjoyed in pastries, beverages or simply on its own. However, the production of cocoa powder, which is the key ingredient in chocolate, comes with significant challenges: - Cocoa trees can only thrive in specific regions along the equatorial belt due to their environmental sensitivity. - The production process often lacks transparency and traceability - Cocoa farming is frequently linked to deforestation - Ensuring ethical and sustainable sourcing is difficult. We know how hard these problems are to overcome, this is why we created our innovative cocoa powder replacers - whether you opt for Castle Chocolat as a natural cocoa substitute or Castle Black for the alkalized cocoa powder. Ideal for chocolate production, bakery and beverages, it can be used in a proportion of up to 20% of the total used cocoa, depending on application. Give these substitutes a try and make your products more eco-friendly, cost-effective and sustainably sourced with Castle Ingredients!

The Sweet Scent of Opportunity - Vanilla Bean As an agricultural trader, I'm excited to share the potential of vanilla bean as a lucrative investment. Despite its high demand in the culinary and fragrance industries, vanilla production faces challenges like labor shortages and climate change. This scarcity often drives up prices, making it a profitable commodity. Key benefits of investing in vanilla bean: - High demand: Vanilla is a versatile ingredient used in food, beverages, and cosmetics. - Limited supply: Production challenges contribute to a relatively stable market. - Potential for price appreciation: Scarcity and increasing demand can lead to price increases. Staggering PRiCE INCREASES for Cacao! what's going on!!! 🗞️ 🤷♀️ And how is it going to affect your favourite chocolate brand … and our cocoa farmers and supply chain? The cost of the key ingredients for making chocolate has now roughly doubled since the start of last year! You read that right…DOUBLED and +40% in February vs January! Cocoa prices have been skyrocketing lately due to a "perfect storm" of poor harvests due to the adverse weather, disease, and financial considerations in certain parts of the world. This is causing broad implications for the global chocolate industry which will very likely include price hikes from your favourite chocolate brands. Some companies may even start "substituting" cacao out for cheaper ingredients - so most likely less healthy sugars or bad oils or other fillers... So you will want to watch your ingredients list.... It’s also causing real challenges for the cocoa farmers right now. Many of whom struggle with poverty. We're all working together. You can help by buying Fairtrade chocolate. Fairtrade Canada Fairtrade cocoa farmers can negotiate a higher price for their product than the conventional market price. Fairtrade improves access to agricultural services like organic training and premium markets. As a result, farmers have an incentive to farm better and sell more. When we choose Fairtrade ingredients, we become more than just a brand, or a farmer, or a grocer, or a shopper. We become the embodiment of a vision for a better, equal future. We become part of a movement for change that makes a difference with our choice. As consumers we have so much power. Please make your every purchase count towards a better world. #fairtrade #thebetterchocolate #fairtradecertified #cocoa #chocolate #buyfairtrade Fairtrade Canada, Mikaila Grace Boyd, Maria F. It looks like Chocolate prices at retail might be reaching an inflection point where we see real midrange demand destruction. Now we are seeing companies like Cargill and Voyage Foods moving to fill a gap in this supply/demand curve by offering “Cocoa Adjacent” chocolates. Is the concept of “adjacency” actually marketable to a mainstream consumer? We’re about to find out. This is fundamentally different from plant based “meats” because it is primarily driven by unit economics instead of lifestyle and percieved health benefits. If “fake meat” cost 50% less than chicken, it would have a much larger TAM than it does. There will be marketing elements to this about the environmental sustainability problems with Cacao, but at the end of the day it is going to come down to unit economics. If Cacao continues to cost what it does today, get ready for protracted marketing campaigns around this. Are “Cacao adjacent” chocolates actually chocolate, when chocolate is defined as being made from Cacao? Are “Meat adjacent” meats actually meat? What about other “problematic” crops like Almonds or Coffee…could we see “almond adjacent” almonds or “synthetic coffee adjacent” coffee? From a pure unit economics standpoint, this all make sense. From a marketing standpoint we could be heading down an interesting path where we stop innovating “alternatives” to commodity-based product. Instead we’re redefining the product itself on a fundamental molecular level. This is definitely innovation, that much is fact. Whether or not this is “GOOD” is debatable. IMO: When the “meat adjacent” Whopper costs 1/2 as much as a regular whopper, and Cacao Free-Hershey’s bars costs 50% as much as regular, we will have moved into a distopian future where “real” food is a luxury only the rich can afford. #innovation #cpg Pod Foods CNBC The Hershey Company Flowspace Total Quality Logistics
