Exciting news: one of the first (certainly not the last) criminal charges for smuggling potent #superpollutants, HFCs! This is a #climate #crime we anticipated, given our prior work as the Post mentions in the story. Today it is one smuggler stopped, thanks to all-of-government approach to preventing and addressing this kind of illegal trade but a lot more remains to be done, globally! The Montreal Protocol, arguably the most successful environmental treaty, is only as successful as its enforcement. We can not afford a lack of vigilance in implementing ambitious climate policies. #illegal #environmentalcrime #smuggling #montrealprotocol #cooling #refrigerants
In the first prosecution related to the 2020 AIM Act, a California man has been arrested for illegally smuggling hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants into the U.S., violating regulations to curb the use of these super-polluting greenhouse gases. "In my opinion, it is a climate crime if you are smuggling HFCs,” says Avipsa Mahapatra, the EIA US Climate Campaign Director. “It obviously undermines our global efforts to phase down the use of these chemicals.” “Back in the 1990s, we saw a lethal black market in CFCs,” she continues. “At that time, the street value of a cylinder of CFCs was nearly matching that of cocaine. It is critical that we stop the illegal trade of HFCs before we reach that state again. Our climate can’t afford that.” Learn more about the case here: https://wapo.st/3V4EVYf
