21 years ago, this day was marked as world suicide prevention day to help break the chain of stigma that exists concerning the conversation around mental health, trauma and suicide. It’s ok, in fact normal not to feel ok. We need to talk. As always, remember: Please stay safe, everyone. Look after each other. If you are feeling like you need help, please feel free to reach out and seek assistance. The new 9-8-8 crisis line here in Canada is a great resource. Or, reach out to a friend, peer support group, or co-worker (including your EAP/EFAP resources). If you know someone who may be at risk, reach out and lend an ear. That may be all they need.

September marks #SuicidePreventionMonth and today, September 10 marks #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, a critical time to change the narrative and align with WHO’s triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for 2024-2026 “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with a call to action “Start the Conversation”. Understanding the importance of language around suicide helps reduce stigma and create safe spaces for open conversations. By using terms like “died by suicide” instead of “committed suicide,” “individual affected by suicide” rather than “suicide victim” we can foster compassion, provide the right support, and importantly, maintain the person’s dignity Let’s work together to raise awareness, offer hope, and save lives. Allow yourself to thrive. #suicidepreventionmonth #changingthenarrativeonsuicide #starttheconversation #WHO #endthestigma #mentalhealth #thrivetherapy
