A humble suggestion for VFX houses as the strike ends: Don't wait too long to bring your teams back. Most companies have downsized, merged, changed pipelines, gone fully remote or cloud-based, brought in new technology, or made any number of other big structural changes. For the benefit of your clients, you need an entire crew that's fully trained up on how your company operates, so they're ready to go before the work officially starts. This has not typically been the case, in my decades of experience (both show-side and vendor-side). VFX companies have the nasty habit of waiting until work is fully secured, before bringing on artists and production teams. It seems safer, financially, to operate this way. It looks better for financial projections. But in practice, this is severely hampering a company's ability to put their best foot forward in delivering for clients (who are going to be even more crunched than ever). It results in a lot of internal stumbling, and frustration from your shows...projects are lost over this kind of thing. You no longer have the luxury of, essentially, misleading clients about your ability to take on complex projects. The entire industry has changed this year, in ways much bigger than just new software or impressive tech demos. This is a chance to change the tone. A chance to not only succeed fantastically for your clients, but also build confidence and loyalty in your talented team members.

***Light at the end of the tunnel*** Yes Yes VFX World - it has been awesome to see a number of profiles starting new positions. Certainly a positive sign that things are slowly recovering. Things will start to build up over the next few months. motus VFX are starting to receive more briefs and VFX Houses are talking to us about larger numbers of hires and should be ready to pull the trigger on hiring in the next month or two. so I just wanted to say if you don't have a position right now hang in there! It is coming. By March/April offers will be everywhere and it will be a battle for talent. The organised VFX Houses will have their crew and things will be back in full swing by May/June. After that it will be the usual poaching of talent by offering unsustainable rates/salaries to get a project over the line leaving a path of destruction 😂 Hold the line you are almost there!!

Chroma 0116 - In Which Ryan Lum Blows Up a Cathedral! Ryan recently dived into the explosive world of FX compositing. This vital skill merges creativity with technical expertise, enabling artists to seamlessly integrate FX elements into live-action footage. It's particularly sought after by studios aiming to create breathtaking cinematic moments. In his latest endeavor, Ryan skillfully composited FX elements (smoke, trails, and explosive effects) onto live-action footage of a cathedral. These challenging projects are not just learning experiences; they mirror the same issues compositors at VFX studios have to wrestle with. They need to understand the current technical limitations of replicating natural phenomena, manage client expectations and convince the audience that these events did occur!
