📖 🎓 Friday afternoon scientific literature enjoyment! 💴 💵 💶 💷 What are the costs of diabetes? And specifically of diabetic foot disease? A number that's bogged me more than once during talks is "33%". This has frequently been suggested as the percentage of all diabetes-related costs that can be attributed to foot ulcers and amputations. And while I know care for them is costly, the validity of the 33% seemed off to me. Now, researchers from York have analysed the direct costs of diabetes for the UK health system, including for all different complications. This research group is specialised in health economic research, and as expected this analysis is thorough and extensive: https://lnkd.in/ehruGg43 💷 So what does treating foot ulcers and amputations costs? A lot! 148 million pounds for treating foot ulcers, and another 468 million pounds for amputations. That makes it 616 million pounds, or 5.8% of the total 10.7 billion pounds required for diabetes care. 💸 That's a lot of money that can be saved by preventing ulcers and amputations, such as what we're trying with our research and implementation programs MSCA-ITN DIALECT and HOMELAND. And it's from a face validity perspective more realistic than the 33%. So let's stop using that number, and start using 5.8%. And most off all: start reducing the 5.8%, by #ActingAgainstAmputation #Together.
