In November, our California Community Colleges Chancellor Sonya Christian, Board of Governors and executive leadership attended the annual Community College League of California convention. Chancellor Christian delivered an inspiring State of the System update to the audience. The state of the system is strong! Overall, the number of students attending a California community college is increasing. ✨ There was an almost 10% increase in the number of students between 2022 and 2023, spefically among veterans, Black, Latino and Native American students. ✨ Dual enrollment is up 24% ✨ There was an increase in the number of students receiving a Pell and/or California College Promise Grant Our Vision 2030 blueprint is guided by the following goals:   🥅 Goal 1: Equity in Success - Ensure the academic and career success of all Californians who are current and prospective California community college students 🥅 Goal 2: Equity in Access - Broaden the opportunities for all Californians to participate in higher education by starting or continuing their higher education at a California community college 🥅 Goal 3: Equity in Support - Partner with other systems, agencies, institutions and communitybased organizations to provide students the academic, financial and social supports necessary to thrive by taking education opportunities and the accompanying support to Californians You can access our State of the System report here: https://lnkd.in/e9_aC8aU

The Early College High School agenda is one of many failed Gates-funded reforms that have been scaled across Texas. Texas ISDs and community colleges are enticed by the ability to double-dip funds as an incentive to adopt the model. The proof is in the pudding that it does not work. Students are having to be remediated in college because the model puts the cart before the horse when they should still be learning the important basics in 9-12. https://lnkd.in/gR2nEKP5

This week we kicked off our Graduate Group in Education Research Seminar series for winter quarter with Justin Luu, Ph.D., and Profs. Sherrie Reed and Heather Rose. The seminar, "All Else Equal: Charter School Attendance and College Enrollment Rates at California’s Three Systems of Higher Education" touched on the gap in enrollment between traditional and charter school students who apply to a California Community College, UC, or CSU. The takeaway? Charter schools have the potential to increase pathways to UCs and CSUs for historically underrepresented student populations. Justin, Sherrie, and Heather will be presenting this research at the International School Choice and Reform Conference this weekend, January 17-20. In a collaboration between the Big Ten, the College Football Playoff Foundation and the Indiana Sports Corp, 15 Indiana teachers received grants to support a classroom project and resources at their schools. The $40,000 total grant aims to support and celebrate innovating teaching and learning.

October is Minnesota State Month! As a member of Minnesota State, Inver Hills Community College is offering many ways for students to save on higher education. This makes October a great time for students to take advantage of visit and tour events and apply for admission. 1. One way to save during Minnesota State Month: we are waiving undergraduate application fees – applying for free is a great way to take your first steps towards a brighter future! 2. Students can take advantage of significant savings on tuition and fees. Already the lowest in the state, undergraduate tuition has been frozen at 2022 levels until Spring 2025. 3. In addition, students from families with an Adjusted Gross Income of less than $80,000 may qualify for the North Star Promise, a program that provides free tuition for eligible students. 5. Finally, students can also save by taking advantage of the many scholarship opportunities available through our foundation, such as Workforce Development Scholarships that encourage students to enter programs in high demand by employers. Follow-up to the Lumina Foundation report on their HBCU adult learner initiative: One of the most interesting insights I gained from supporting Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) last year is that many of their adult learners desire a "full college experience." They want to feel as valued as traditional students and integrated into the campus community. This is a different sentiment from research I've conducted at PWIs, where adult learners often want to get in and get out without much fuss. One key action step that arose: Design an adult learner "Signature Student Experience" that starts from application and extends to alumhood. For HBCUs, which are deeply rooted in tradition, incorporating elements of the student experience such as Greek life, band, choir, and other traditions can significantly enhance the adult learner experience and provide them with the enriching college journey they seek - and frankly, pay for.
