In my teenage years, Makar Sankranti meant heading to the terrace with friends in Mumbai, flying kites with gusto. School holidays, Mom's delectable festive spread, and the post-Pooja warmth made it magical. Our neighbors would share Tilgul, saying "Tilgul kha god god bola" - a sweet reminder to speak kindly in Marathi. Those childhood days were filled with joy, surrounded by friends and family. Fast forward to today, as a married individual, the celebrations have transformed. I find myself immersed in Pooja rituals, crafting Tilgul, and reliving those precious memories. Yet, beyond personal celebrations, Makar Sankranti embodies hope and honors farmers' hard work. Their dedication motivates me to strive for goals with similar determination. “Any publicity is good publicity!” Do you agree? Or not? Phineas T. Barnum, a circus owner is generally credited with coining this phrase and that is where it belongs, a circus! Remember, Poonam Pandey’s death drama, good if you don’t 🙂 . That was a shining example and now how much good work comes her way is definitely questionable. While it's tempting to believe that all attention, even if negative, can benefit a brand, this ideology is a cliche & damaging. While it's true that exposure can increase brand awareness, the quality of that exposure is paramount. Negative publicity can tarnish a brand's reputation, erode consumer trust, and ultimately harm long-term success. On the other hand, there have been great examples of good, steady brand building like Balkrishna Industries (BKT), you’d have seen them on the IPL T-shirt & on the sidelines of some world class sports too. Or take BIRA91, the Indian crafted beer, though they were making a loss in the last couple of years, as a brand they are trusted and are in for the long haul. Many many such stories around us from the tiniest ice cream store around the corner run by a friendly aunty, to which we keep going for years after year. Quality over quantity every time! When you need to crack a 'hard' nut, you need to hit it hard, but if you are making jewellery or a sculpture, you use a softer and more delicate force. If you hit too hard or too soft, you might ruin your work. #brand #communication is just like that hammer. You need to know how much force to exert to let your #brandmessage be understood and achieve the desired impact. Hard selling of product’s features, advantages, and benefits, may be just right for getting #sales #conversions , but may not work that way when your objective is to build your #brandpersonality . One needs to be sensitive enough to understand when to be persuasive and when to be creative. The Amaze ad released for #diwali2023 is an excellent example of the product’s value proposition while also telling a captivating story. All kudos to the Bodh Entertainment team for the excellent execution, and embellishing the storyline with some amazing copywriting. Both the line ‘"Maa baap ke bachchon ko samajhne ka speed, bachchon ke bade hone ke speed se thodi si kam hoti hai" and "I was so busy in safeguarding you that I never noticed that your feet had started touching the ground!" creates the right opportunity for the brand placement. The subtlety with which the brand placement is done and appears visually adds up its impact. This is the highlight of the thoughtful execution of the brief. Building #brands is an art. It needs the right environment and nourishment to blossom. The #marketing team and the management team at Amaze also deserve equal credit for giving the agency a clear vision and trusting their #creative approach. What a cracker of a line!! - "Maa baap ke bachchon ko samajhne ka speed, bachchon ke bade hone ke speed se thodi si kam hoti hai" (the speed at which parents understand their children is slightly slower than the speed at which their children grow). Later, there's another beautiful line where the father is referring to the time he was teaching cycling to his son: "I was so busy in safeguarding you that I never noticed that your feet had started touching the ground!". Inverter brand Amaze (from Luminous) nails the festive (Deepavali, in this case) storytelling brilliantly in this ad conceptualized by Bodh Entertainment! This is not a 'here's why you should buy Amaze inverters' pitch. Amaze has the entire year to make such product-centric pitches. Deepavali is about people, not brands. The people and the festivity take precedence over selling the product in such communication. This also follows the basic logic that people don't consciously think of brands during such festivals even though brand managers and agencies continue to believe that people (should) think of their brands all the time, even during festivals. People think of their needs and within that context, some brands may come to their mind first. Brands are incidental to our lives and festive ads could do with understanding this basic nuance while crafting festive ads, as this Amaze ad appropriately does by merely using a throwaway line to fit the product in the story (though it is entirely contextual and relevant to the plot since the credit is given the first-born son who is at the center of the narrative).
