Tis the season, the holidays are right around the corner and charities are doing there best to win over your donations by the end of the year. I don’t know about you, but I can relate charity giving to purchasing a roof by the end of the year (or early into next year) for a few reasons. I wanted to share with you a few: When I give I try to get to know the organization. Do their goals align with mine? Is it something that I am passionate about, do I connect with their mission. What percentage of the funds actually go to those whom they were intended? This can take some time, because you want to do your due diligence, which is similar to purchasing a roof.  This is similar to buying a roof in the winter. Because you are saving your most important project for last. You might of spent weeks or months researching the best material to use, which type of roof to use (yes, there are more than asphalt shingles) on your roof and the best company to install. That is probably why you are waiting for the winter, because of all the research you have done! This can be a wise choice because you were able to do your due diligence, get to know your sales person, and to find out the options on how you can purchase a roof through Atlas. Contact me to discuss. 🚨#AllHatAndNoCattle (aka #FireDrillFundraising)💥 (Post 1 of 5) Fire drill fundraising is an appeal that is high on urgency and emotion with little to no substance. My heart sinks when I see charity leaders resort to the tactic because it erodes trust and relationships with givers. Are there times it is necessary? Sure, but you need to infuse credibility into the invitation. If you don’t, you risk getting labeled “all hat and no cattle” by my Texas friends. And spoiler alert: “all hat and no cattle” is not a sustainable fundraising strategy. This is the first in a series of 5 posts on fire drill fundraising. Please ask yourself honestly, how often are you in fire drill mode? If you are constantly treating your cause as an emergency you will wear out your audience.  People will look away when you come around the corner with an email/phone call/mail appeal/etc. Ouch.
