I think it's also good to remember that cover letters seem much longer on mobile than a desktop. Before anyone hits send they should view their submission in both formats. But no matter what - an informal message with emojis or text speak would not be what I'd want to read. For me to respond positively to a candidate, I'd want the letter to appear professional.

I agree that cover letters still have a place in the hiring process - but the sample letters all look a little long to me (as a hiring manager). I think the key thing for a candidate to say is why they are interested in a particular job at a particular company, which should be "doable" in 2-4 sentences. Just a thought.

You make an excellent point - content & length should be guided by what you want your reader to know that’s in addition to what they can find on your resume. It’s your “tell me more” opportunity. If you can succinctly convey your message in a few sentences- go for it.
