Having just completed my first Glastonbury and experienced such communal Euphoria, it got me thinking - if only we could be as free, energised, and creative at work as we are at a festival—minus the booze and other substances, of course! Over Glastonbury weekend I realised a lifelong dream of performing in a rock band. At 38 I was no Old Dog, but it can still feel difficult to learn New Tricks! Here's a few things that the 'uncomfortably exciting' experience taught me: - 'Moonshots start with Roofshots'. Our village's Midsummer Festival isn't quite Glastonbury, but it's the first step in that direction. - A great leader can inspire you to do things you didn't believe you could and steer a team to achieve a vision. It took a lot of convincing to get me from jamming in a garden shed with 3 other dads to playing a hall full of 80-90 people (that I know and was terrified of failing in front of). Thanks Ran Michaeli for your patience and unwavering belief! - 'Teamwork makes the dream work'. We all made mistakes, and supporting and motivating each other to keep getting better as a group, sharing constructive feedback and building on individual strengths was much better than criticising individual errors. - 'Don't let perfect be the enemy of good'. The covers we played weren't 100% faithful, but were good enough to get people dancing! Another year of getting things perfect would have deprived both us and the crowd of a lot of fun. - 'Get outside the building to validate your hypotheses'. While we spent a long time deliberating over the right songs to play, the audience gave strong feedback about which ones they liked, signals that we'll use to iterate on the next version of our product. Most importantly, this has inspired me to keep getting better at something that gives me a lot of joy. Watch out for 'Wailing Wolves' coming to a lineup near you! 🤘🏻🐺🤘🏻

This picture of the Boardmaster festival is all over the News worldwide, the festival is over and all of these tents are left behind. But it seems a bit like the media has misunderstood the responsibility of the organizers and the partners, blaming the festival goers. But who is actually responsible for this? Willy Wonka indeed. For me, this latest debacle of an event opens up the question on how events that do not have alcohol or regulated entertainment are regulated. Clearly there is something wrong when people are able to open an event to the public with such low levels of professionalism. There are plenty of red flags with this event, whether its the AI generated images on the event website, or the AI generated pictures of previous events from the event organisers, even though the company was only formed in the last quarter of 2023. Watching the video on STV, it confirmed my initial thoughts that if the production and creative elements were poor, the general level of safety would also be poor. And there are a catalogue of hazard spotting games to view as you watch the 30 second clip. Whether it's trailing cables or poorly constructed elements. It doesn't look to be at a standard the local authority would accept. I do not know what the answer is, but there needs to be a better way of ensuring public safety at these type of events that currently wouldn't need a licence or local authority notification. Is the answer to make sure that responsible/accountable persons at events are trained to a minimum level and are licensed under a scheme.
