When trying to find sollutions we have to think in more than one dimension. When approaching even the most common and strait forward challenges in our daily lives when we use more than one perspective and look at it from all angles we are able to find sollutions that are empowering and sustainable. Just as in when designing a shirt and when designing empowerment opportunities for those that experience homelessness we have to look at the situation from all perspectives and factors. Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities.There are five main principles of social justice that are paramount to understanding the concept better. Namely, these are access to resources, equity, participation, diversity, and human rights. Today is #InternationalLiteracyDay and according to UNESCO, there are around 765 illiterate adults in the world. As a student of Human Development and Literature, the issue of illiteracy is particularly important to me. With two-thirds of illiterate adults being women, these alarming illiteracy numbers are not only a socioeconomic issue, but also a clear feminist issue. Literacy is a human right, and one so fundamental to navigating the world that it can often be forgotten in conversations on social inequality. This needs to change; We can’t let policy makers and leaders forget about this issue. To support communities to lift themselves out of poverty, women and girls must have equitable access to resources and opportunities.   AdaraRemote is our holistic community development model, which aims to improve access to essential services for people living in remote areas. It spans five pillars which support communities to truly thrive, the third of which is child protection.   By improving quality of education and helping to keep children – especially girls – in school, we aim to eliminate child trafficking and child marriage in our areas of operation. In 2023, 52% of students enrolled across the 15 Adara-supported schools were girls.   Together, we can pave the way for a brighter and more equitable future for all.

Waterloo Region recently lost its only women-only shelter, highlighting the urgent need for dedicated spaces for homeless women. Women face unique challenges and safety concerns that are not adequately addressed in mixed-gender shelters. For instance, a local study found that nearly 3 out of 4 women avoid coed shelters due to safety concerns. This is why services and organizations like Nisa Foundation are crucial. We are committed to filling this gap by providing safe, supportive environments specifically for women, especially those who are racialized. Our efforts aim to ensure that women in our community have access to the resources they need to feel secure and supported.
