🟣Media coverage tends to focus more on the victims rather than the perpetrators, with 75% more mentions of victim attributes, highlighting personal aspects such as age and profession, rather than the aggressor's actions. It is time to change the approach by adapting a gender perspective, promoting media coverage that educates and encourages real change. #THEPURPLECHECK 🆕https://lnkd.in/gFHFZMMQ

My discussion for the 3rd Annual Sex and Communication Lecture Series at the University of Tampa. The speech was first presented for Speech 308: Special Topics in Speech. 😁 Summary: Three female victims in the Netflix show "Bojack Horseman" reinforce the idea that people who undergo abuse from a popular star in a position of power remain silent about their experience. However, the show disrupts the idea that celebrities can get away with their actions and won't be bought to justice, even when victims stay silent. #PublicSpeaking #Communications #CollegeStudent https://lnkd.in/eCi2cvZJ

In the wake of recent events, media's role in spotlighting critical issues is more crucial than ever. Yet, amidst the flurry of news, essential stories, like the alarming rise of sexual harassment cases, often vanish from the headlines. This oversight underscores the importance of media not only in amplifying important news but also in ensuring that no voice is silenced or story overlooked. By shining a light on systemic injustices and holding perpetrators accountable, media can catalyze meaningful societal change and foster a culture of empathy and accountability. As we navigate an ever-evolving media landscape, it's imperative that we demand and support responsible journalism that prioritizes truth, transparency, and the voices of the marginalized. 📱 Social media plays a complicated role in violence between girls. It serves to cause, promote and share violence, as well as normalising violence. Many young women saw violent content online as entertainment, but serious graphic violence had a lasting impact on them. Worryingly, young women felt limited responsibility when they were 'viewers' and had little confidence in the moderation functions of social media platforms. Learn more about the links between violence and social media, as well as our recommendations, in the full report, The Lassies are No Feart: https://lnkd.in/dPaCa_Mj

Development Professional (Gender and Human Rights) | MPM Candidate | Principal Consultant: Rights Based Solutions | Apolitical 50 Gender Equality Gamechangers
World Sexual Health Day was observed on the 4th of September under the theme "Relationships" According to UNFPA "Good sexual and reproductive health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive system. It implies that people are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life..." After seeing this sickening story we realise how sexual health concerns remain an issue for women globally where they are not even safe with those that they love. We also have the Ugandan runner Cheptegei who died after boyfriend set her on fire and we wonder why women chose the bear🤔. As an avid long distance walker I'm fearful of two things on my early morning walks, dogs- that I can mostly fend off with a stick or pepper spray which is illegal by the way, and men. Though armed with pepper spray, I have to ensure that I'm dressed in a way that poses a challenge to a would be attacker. Sad reality isn't it! Some are disillusioned into thinking women have achieved gender equality simply because of increased visibility of women in the work space. Sexual violence against women denies them full body autonomy which is a human rights violation.Women's control over their bodies is central to achieving gender equality and we need concrete actions to address this. All this is rooted in toxic social norms which manifest in toxic masculine behaviour which desperately needs dismantling. This is central to the work that I do but admittedly a challenging undertaking- many schools do not have a curriculum that address gender issues, many companies lack GESI policies, legislative gaps also exist(marital rape is not an illegal act btw)..... These challenges however reveal some solutions to tackle this scourge. #violenceagainstwomen #sexualhealth #humanrights

Reinventing your leadership journey (in & out of healthcare)| Bespoke mentoring | Elevating your career, confidence and purpose | Creating a life you don’t want to escape from | Advocate for DA SurTHRIVors🎤
Abuse can happen to anyone of us! Day 2 of sharing posts that raise awareness of gender based violence and domestic abuse that’s more prevalent in women. (I’m not saying it doesn’t affect guys it absolutely does but in a tiny minority and it’s still important that we end it!) If you’ve ever heard me speak 🗣️ on podcasts or at events about this subject you will know the one thing I’m mega passionate about is changing the language that insinuates that abused people let it happen Labels like broken, damaged and victim! Questions from people you know and love like; “Why didn’t you just leave?” (If I had a penny for that one I’d have built a community of housing for people to escape to) Headlines in the press; “A girl was walking home alone, after drinking 12 glasses of champagne at a party, wearing a short skirt and brutally raped and murdered” All of these conversations we can change; Anyone who’s left an abusive husband, wife, mother, etc you are strong AF don’t let anyone tell you otherwise 💜 When someone trusts you enough to share their trauma experience, hold space and ask what can I do right now to help you? Don’t inflict your opinion’s or say “oh but he didn’t look like an abuser” And lastly in this post when you see a news headline online that shames the person hurt first painting a picture that they somehow asked for it- ask the author in the comments why didn’t they start with the facts instead e.g. violent perpetrator with no self control brutally murdered/ assaulted another human. If you don’t follow Carrie Bower then check out her work because the amount of older people in the world subjected to abuse is astounding. We are grateful that she is raising awareness and providing support. The statistics show that in any given gathering at least one person in the room is living with abuse😥 Let’s collaboratively stand together and change the stories and disrupt the patterns! #iwd2024 #domesticviolenceawareness #domesticabuseawareness #empoweringcommunities #conversationsthatmatter
Raising the visibility of women in mid & later life affected by trauma & domestic abuse. I use LinkedIn, my podcast & blog to do this. I am the Domestic Abuse Lead at Age UK national charity, which is not gendered.
Pleased to see women in mid & later life affected by domestic abuse being discussed on mainstream television. This rarely happens. Today feels like progress. #domesticabuse #noagelimit

One of the most important aspects of storytelling is to allow the stories of survivors to be shared with their own voices and as their own experiences and stories. We as witnesses must give all survivors that agency, respect and control over their own narratives, including when and where they choose to tell them. Human Trafficking is too important a global crisis to continue to allow misinformation and politicization to overshadow the real work of countless activists and survivors. We must pledge not use the issues of sex and labor trafficking or the survivors as a political chess piece. https://lnkd.in/exiV866C

👏 Spark is proud to have contributed to the findings of this new report on the challenges of online hatred and content moderation from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, alongside RAND Europe, Center for the Study of Democracy, and Oxford Brookes University. The report found that to tackle online hate, the EU and online platforms should: 📢 Provide a safer online space for all; 📢 Provide more guidance; 📢 Capture all forms of online hate; 📢 Test technology for bias; and 📢 Ensure access to data for independent research. Spark detailed the legal frameworks on online hatred in Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, and Sweden. We then outlined how online hatred interferes with fundamental rights, most notably in relation to the right to dignity and non-discrimination, whilst also addressing the freedom of expression. See also the new Communication from the European Commission: "No place for hate: a Europe united against hatred" (europa.eu).
A new European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights report examines the challenges of detecting and removing hate speech from social media. It analysis of comments and posts across four social media platforms in four EU countries shows that abusive comments, harassment and even incitement to violence easily slip through social media platforms' content moderation tools. Women are the main targets of online hate but Jews, Roma and people of African descent are also often targetted. It identifies the main challenges to tackling online hate. These include a lack of common understanding of what hate speech is as well as no access to platform data. The report suggests ways forward such as greater transparency and guidance on identifying online hate speech to ensure a safer online space for all.
