Air pollution is a leading environmental risk factor and public health challenge for premature death and disease. The Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) study of 2021 estimated that air pollution (both ambient and household ) was responsible for approximately 6.7 million deaths globally. The burden of disease due to air pollution is disproportionately higher in low- and middle-income countries, particularly for vulnerable populations. While India has implemented several measures to mitigate air pollution, the involvement of private sector is essential to foster collaboration, innovation and transformative action. It was heartening to see the US – India commitment. The release of ‘Partners in Progress: U.S. Industry in India’ by AMCHAM showcases 58 member organizations that continue to embrace opportunities contributing to India’s growth story. Our work, at Vital Strategies, is highly relevant from a public health perspective as governments seek to strengthen and align strategies towards these development goals. We extend policy support towards improving air quality by building capacities of cities worldwide to monitor local air quality and equipping frontline healthcare workers to respond to health harms caused by air pollution. In India, our work towards training Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) on the health effects of air pollution and protective measures is pivotal in building knowledge and raising community awareness as ASHAs are a bridge between policymakers and communities. Vital Strategies Climate and Environment health practice continues to prioritize work in this important area. #AMCHAM #Airpollution #vitalstrategies #netzero
