🌍 Reflections from the Design for Planet Festival 2024 🌿 Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the Design for Planet Festival, an inspiring event that showcased the power of design in driving businesses toward net-zero goals while ensuring profitability. Here are a few standout themes from the day: 👕 Regenerative design is not just a trend but a crucial business strategy. Patrick Grant's work with Community Clothing exemplifies how rethinking the entire product lifecycle can make sustainability both affordable and competitive. ♻️ Business model innovation must go hand in hand with design for a truly circular future. The debate on whether design should focus on products or business models revealed that systemic change is needed for long-term environmental impact. 🏙️ Retrofitting and repurposing spaces, as seen in Manchester, offer a practical and profitable solution to housing and commercial development challenges. This is a clear demonstration of how circularity can redefine industries at scale. 🤝 Most importantly, the future of design is collaborative. Whether it's harnessing digital storytelling, embedding green behavior into corporate culture, or leveraging Doughnut Economics to redesign business models, the collective insights from the day underscored the necessity of cross-disciplinary approaches. Events like this remind us that impactful change is about thoughtful, pragmatic shifts in strategy. 💡 Link to agenda in comments if you want ot find out more #CircularEconomy #DesignForPlanet #SustainableBusiness #BusinessModelInnovation #NetZero Design Council

QU: Why is it important that we shift our thinking to one where designing for a social purpose is not a burden but an opportunity to make our designs better? ANS: Quite frankly we are in deep trouble and its only getting more difficult. We need to significantly reduce our carbon emissions, while at the same time enable wellbeing for people where more and more are entering the middle class. So, we need to do more with a lot less – and that takes a new paradigm shift where we allow ourselves to think outside existing norms and define success as the ability to create value for people while staying within the planetary boundaries and using that ambition as the driver for innovation. Wrapping up the week with a few reflections from the Design Council's Design for Planet Festival 🌱 🌍 𝗣𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆. Faith In Nature's decision to give "Mother Nature" a seat on their board is more than symbolic. It’s a reminder that our decisions must account for more than just profit— considering our impact on our environments too (they've even shared an open-sourced framework if you're interested!). 🚫 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 ‘𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆’. I loved one studio’s practice of banning the word "sustainability". It forces us to think - what do we actually mean? Is it reducing harm, creating positive impact, or building regenerative systems? By removing vague generalisations, we can get to the heart of the change we want to see. 🛣️ 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. We’re running on auto-pilot to prioritise profit over planet. But what if we flipped this thinking? Instead of starting with “How can we make money?”, we could begin with “What does the world need most?” The impact? A shift towards solutions that support a more balanced ecosystem while ensuring business viability. 💸 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 $$$. Focussing on financial gain often sidelines other forms of capital—social, ecological, and cultural value are a few to consider. This direction matters immensely and can be incorporated into wider OKRs and how you measure 'success'. 👀 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻. Patrick Grant’s stats were eye-opening: • We have enough clothing on Earth to last six generations • 2% of the worlds carbon footprint is from trainers • 350 million barrels of oil a year go into making clothes, with 30% ending up in landfill 🤯 We don’t need more clothes; we need better ones—fewer, high-quality products that stand the test of time and reduce our environmental footprint. The festival was a timely reminder that design is not just about products and services; it’s about the systems we create, the values we prioritise, and the impact we leave behind. It’s a shift in our mindset from “more” to “better.” Big thanks to all the speakers who shared so openly 🙏 James Vaccaro Martyn Evans Hon FRIBA Tanya Popeau Simeon Rose Nilesha Chauvet Minnie Moll Sophie Thomas

"If design is the biggest lever to sustainability, why don't designers simply change the products' designs?" Well, if it were that easy... sustainability opens up a lot of new unknow and undefined trade-offs. In addition, the whole value-chain must be considered. That makes Design for Sustainability a team sport - both within and between companies - so that the required skills are where they can unfold their greatest impact. #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #DesignForSustainability
