Last year, Loblaw launched “Ask for Angela” in partnership with Victim Services Toronto to help women facing violence across the GTA. Today, I’m pleased to share that we’ve joined forces with Women’s Crisis Services (WCSWR) of Waterloo Region to expand the “Ask for Angela” program across Waterloo. The program’s expansion really speaks to the urgency for safety and care that violence-affected women, gender-diverse individuals and children need. According to WCSWR, since 2020, there has been a marked increase in the level of violence and injury to victims who’ve been attended to at the Waterloo hospital.   We’re proud to be the first retailer in Canada to introduce “Ask for Angela”, and I’m confident this program’s remarkable ability will create a safer community in Waterloo.   How does it work? The program revolves around discreetly approaching staff members at participating Loblaw stores and requesting “Angela” as a code-phrase. This will signal to staff that the individual needs support. Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region will be contacted for support.   Read the news release to learn more on how the program works and about WCSWR. https://lnkd.in/dJ8s962u

Dean, thank you for sharing this vital update about the expansion of the “Ask for Angela” program across Waterloo. It’s incredibly heartening to see Loblaw Companies Limited take such a proactive stance in addressing the urgent needs of women, gender-diverse individuals, and children affected by violence. By partnering with Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region, you are not only extending a lifeline to those in immediate danger but also fostering a sense of security and community that goes far beyond the walls of your stores. The initiative is a testament to Loblaw's commitment to making a tangible difference in the communities it serves. As a frequent shopper at both Loblaw and Shoppers (Pharmaprix), it’s reassuring to know that the places I trust for my family’s needs are also spaces where safety and support are readily accessible. This move surely sets a high standard for corporate responsibility, emphasizing that businesses can indeed play a crucial role in societal welfare. Keep up the remarkable work—your efforts are truly making a difference in making our communities safer for everyone.

Women are more likely to be a victim of abuse and less likely to speak out. This is a great safety support system!
