As the football Transfer Season begins and rumours running faster than a winger down the sideline, it's the perfect time to explore a finance term as part of our Word Wednesday often used in finance classes and company boardrooms to make strategic financial decisions: #Amortisation. In football, Amortisation involves spreading a player's transfer fee over the length of their contract (just like how companies amortise the value for an asset they may have paid upfront for), which can be extended up to 5 years under the latest UEFA rules. This method allows clubs to stay competitive and adhere to financial fair play rules while signing top talents. #WordWednesday

On the recent law changes…i wish they would add, 1) no picking and going or Driving mauls from on or beyond the 5m (attacking) line. 2) no more tag rugby 3) bring the back line back up to the hind most feet at scrummage. 4) when the ball makes contact with the ground a ruck is formed. My reasons are 1) End Boring predictability 2) Tag promotes all eyes on the tag, not seeing space. An organised game of touch rugby would be much faster, less stop/start. Eg player touched = All defenders move backwards 5 paces & 1st receiver (in Attack) = Approx 5 paces deep from the base. All players have less than 2 seconds to pass unless running into space or being in the clear. 3) A static flat backline is easier to manipulate because a) with more space a defender usually picks up an attackers running line/tactical play sooner. b) If Defenders are further up, attackers will adjust their depth accordingly and defenders will have less time to read plays. c) more space behind for attacking kicks 4) should RE simplify what used to be a SIMPLE game. Make it safer. Ruck/Maul. Hands on/Hands off. Win a ruck by driving a player away and getting beyond the ball. Be allowed to hold the player or rackle to the ground (who is driven off the ball), which will prevent defenders from running away from rucks and spreading wide across the pitch.

The ongoing saga with Mr Dai continues. The latest instalment: the decision of the independent disciplinary commission. The commission seems to suggest that it is caught between a rock and hard place. To my mind, the fine imposed feels like a cop out. This decision reinforces some of the arguments for an independent regulator. Whatever your view on the need for an independent regulator, you cannot help but feel for Reading and its fans - the existing framework has, and is continuing to, let them down. We await the Football Governance Bill. #football #footballbusiness #independentfootballregulator #footballgovernancebill #mergersandacquisitions https://lnkd.in/etCjCdUs

As Alvine Capital takes a closer look at sports investing with our upcoming Thought Piece, we interested ourselves in football, which continues to provide the most liquid market partly due to the number of investable assets. According to research by Deloitte, football comprised 52% of all sports rights holder deals globally in 2023 with the majority of the football deal flow stemming from North American investors. English clubs were the primary target, making up 29% of all football deals in 2023. But is America’s love affair with investing in the Premier League fading? This article gives a few reasons, including currency exchange considerations. #sports #sportinvesting #olympics #privateequity #alternativeinvesting #footballinvesting #soccer #football #premierleague
