Today Akash Paun and Matthew Fright at the Institute for Government have released a new report on the future of devolution, which backs our calls for every county to have the option for a devolution deal by 2029, and argues that county and unitary councils should be the building blocks of agreements. It sets out several options for how the devolution map can be completed: https://lnkd.in/e43Gxeer

The publication of the English Devolution White Paper has pledged sweeping reforms with proposals aiming to simplify local government structures, reduce duplication and give every region a stronger voice. While these changes aim to drive efficiency and empower local areas, they also create a series of hurdles that central government will need to clear. In an article for TheMJ, our Partner Laura Hughes predicts how devolution could play out over the coming years and sets out some practical tips for local authorities on how to prepare. There’s a lot of talk about devolution and local government re-organisation. With over 20 years experience in local government – unitary, district & combined plus years in the private sector and brief flirtations with other sectors, I have my own thoughts on these matters. Fortunately for you I have no professional agency to express them. I have always focused on delivering for businesses and communities no matter what structure I sit in. Early lessons from the private sector I guess – for whilst the customer (client/community) is not always right they are always important.
