“I was invited for the launch of the very first National Agriculture Day at the Australian War Memorial. I can honestly say it was one of the proudest days of my life,” recalls Gary Kadwell. This National Ag Day, we are bringing our farmers to the forefront and celebrating their contribution to our lives. A fourth-generation farmer from Crookwell with a focus on spuds and lambs, Gary has been a custodian of the land from a very young age. “To me, it's been the greatest career I could have ever chosen. I have enjoyed every minute of it.” “And to see Ag Day recognised nationally and putting it at the forefront of the public, I think it’s a great concept. And if we can continue to promote agriculture in a positive light, that's a win-win all round,” added Gary. #AgDayAu #GrowYouGoodThing NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development

We ❤️ farmers and ranchers! During January, we're spotlighting the incredible farmers and ranchers that NCAT supports. We're launching our brand new series, Farmer Profiles, produced by acclaimed filmmaker Graham Merriweather, and today we're featuring Natasha Crawford, owner of Healing Hope Urban Gardens in Chesterfield, Virginia. Natasha is a veteran and a graduate of NCAT’s Armed to Farm program, and some of her earliest memories include learning about growing and eating healthy food in her grandmother’s garden in Georgia. She specializes in growing a diverse array of vegetables, some of which she first encountered during her military service. Healing Hope is a working urban garden and a healing space for members of the community. The farmers in this series raise fruit, vegetables, flowers, and animals on farms and urban gardens from New Hampshire to Kentucky, on operations that range in size from less than an acre to more than 40 acres. But these differences mean very little. They share a commitment to stewarding the land and serving their communities, and we are proud to partner with them. ICYMI, #Ontarian LIF especially, #Ontarians overall -- please read & share widely! -- MCK. ~~~~~ " ... In the past couple of weeks, it has come to light that Wilmot Township, the Region of Waterloo, and the provincial government (through the provincial agency, the Ontario Realty Corporation), have contracted a US-based consulting company to threaten affected farmers and landowners with expropriation should they refuse to sell their land for the development of an industrial site. The 770 acres of prime farmland slated for industrial development are home to vegetable, grain, and dairy operations as well as two significant creeks that flow into the Nith River. To date, the process has been unfair to farmers, undemocratic, and has lacked public transparency. Reports of farmers being threatened with expropriation if they do not accept the offers presented to them is nothing short of intimidation tactics used by the consultants, Canacre Ltd. These threats and fast-tracked timelines impose undue hardship on farmers during this critical period of time in the farming calendar. The success and sustainability of their livelihoods hinge directly on the efforts they invest in their farms now, making such pressures particularly detrimental. We stand with the half-dozen farmers and landowners being pressured into this farmland loss, as well as with concerned farmers and community members in Wilmot Township, Waterloo Region and all those across Ontario who are joining together to call for farmland protection and for the immediate pause of this land assembly in Wilmot Township. In addition this particular site poses potential risks to the health of the region’s water systems. Given that there are two creeks on the land proposed for development and that underground aquifers account for 80% of the region’s water supply, we demand that the Region of Waterloo and Wilmot Township solicit the expertise of the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) regarding potential impacts on the region’s water and ecological health. Speeding up development assessment processes and disregarding the precautionary principle could result in major public health concerns and permanent ecological damage ..." #DougFord #Conservatives #expropriation #transparency #accountability #farmers #farmland #aquifers #environment #watersupply #ecology #conservation #flora #fauna #habitats #homegrown #foodsupply #foodsecurity #publichealth #greenspace #environmentalprotection #stewardship #legacy #TOpoli #GTHApoli #onpoli #cdnpoli #globalpoli #globalimpact

A new briefing from the The Wildlife Trusts released to day highlights that urgent changes are required to ensure ELM schemes in England to addresss food security challenges. Investment in Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier and Landscape Recovery is equally important to ensure long term food security. They are calling for: 🦋 A plan to deliver at least 3,000 Countryside Stewardship Agreements per year by 2028. 🧑🌾 An increase to the annual farming budget to £3.1 billion/year in England to support nature-friendly farming, safeguard livelihoods, improve animal welfare. 🚜 A focus on ensuring that Landscape Recovery projects get “off the shelf” and enter the implementation phase, delivering real outcomes on the ground. 🍓 Publication of an outcomes-focused Land Use Framework which sets out an overarching framework that guides prioritisation for land use change. Last month marked a pivotal moment as we convened a comprehensive dialogue with leaders across the agricultural spectrum, including apiculture, fisheries, and animal husbandry. This unified assembly provided a platform for these diverse sectors to articulate the current state of agriculture from their unique perspectives. I was joined by Deputy Governor Alwyn Jordan and our Research & Economic Analysis Department (READ) in these critical conversations — the first of their kind since 2022. Together, we delved into the sector’s performance, assessed the impacts of Hurricane Beryl, and discussed key future challenges and opportunities, focusing on climate resilience, labour, and financing. This collaboration with essential stakeholders enables the Central Bank of Barbados to capture accurate, on-the-ground insights, enhancing our economic research and effectiveness in policy advice. Such engagements are vital as they enrich our understanding of the Barbadian economy and empower us to offer more targeted support to this crucial industry. #SectorEngagement #StrengtheningAgriculture #CentralBankofBarbados

Thanks to the team at Farmers for Climate Action for sharing this link in light of National Reconciliation week. Farmers for Climate Action started when about 10 farmers signed a public petition seeking acknowledgment of climate change impacting our farms almost 10 years ago, now telling much the same stories and successes we set out to do with the initial Farmer Letter. Here’s to those that saw the change and acted boldly. And in the spirit of Reconciliation Week- Now More Than Ever do we need mob sharing stories as part of these yarns. #climatechange #NRW2024 #reconciliation #change #environment #sustainability
One of FCA's founding farmers, Joshua Gilbert, is a fourth-generation First Nations grazier on Worimi Country, around the mid-north coast of NSW. Joshua is proud of his family farm's history, but still hears stories of Indigenous families receiving less for their livestock than their non-Indigenous counterparts. Indigenous knowledge is rich with insight and a deeply entrenched understanding of the land, and Australian agriculture can only benefit from working hard towards reconciliation through consultation, collaboration and understanding. We at FCA are eager to embark on our reconciliation journey, under the guidance of First Nations farmers and communities, to bring about equality of opportunity in Australian agriculture. Watch Joshua's story below, filmed in 2023 for ABC, and you can read the artice here: https://lnkd.in/gC5-mTvM #NationalReconciliationWeek #NowMoreThanEver #FarmersForClimateAction
