As part of the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute, Lead DSM brought community leaders to Lee Tesdell's farm to learn more about conservation 🌱 and water quality. Equipping these individuals with hands-on experience in the field will help them make decisions that will positively impact both urban and rural communities 🏘 throughout Iowa. Partially funded by the soybean checkoff.

What the heck is a Capstan, and why would you (Bruce Joshua) name a company after one (whatever it is!)? 🤷♂️ 🧐 The Capstan is what some might call a primitive form of a winch. I, on the other hand, view it as technologicial genius, a simple means of moving heavy objects by using intelligence and leverage as opposed to brute force. Fishermen used this one in my native community to haul heavy wooden boats loaded with nets - and ideally fish - ashore to safely unload them and to ensure the boat would be safe from the force of the ocean, and accessible (not drifting off!). This was crucial in rugged, remote areas in an era when wharves were non-existant (there at least). So, why did *I* choose The Capstan to represent my company? Firstly, this specific one is located in the area of Isle Madame, Cape Breton (Nova Scotia) where my ancestors established themselves, and where my Dad grew up. My Dad himself became a fisherman, indeed a well-respected captain, and from age 14 toiled on the seas to earn a living and provide for his family. As we approach Father's Day, I recognize his sacrifices and his courage, and the importance of the Capstan in demonstrating resilience, courage, strength, and conviction. My Dad discouraged me from a life in the fisheries. However, I am fortunate to have learned many valuable lessons from the sea, most notably humility, and to share them with clients through my consulting role. Want to learn more? There's something powerful and unique about leadership when it is nurtured in an outdoor environment. Away from screens and boardrooms, the outdoors challenges us in unexpected ways, making us adaptable and resilient. #leadership #campjoy #getoutside https://lnkd.in/gWSV3ZP

It’s not only the people in our family tree who influence our world and worldview. The institutions and organisations they belonged to shape our perception of what is normal. For five generations, my maternal grandmother’s family, the Kelly’s, were in the Open Brethren Movement. In this episode, we meet the Kelly family, and discover what the Open Brethren is, and how growing up in it shapes my thinking today: about organisational structure, about leadership, about faith. I really appreciate you joining me on this journey, and welcome you to share your experiences as well. #genealogy #faith #leadership #organisationalstructure

"Sometimes, the best option is to do nothing! In this video, the deer remain unshaken despite the chaos and tension around them—a great lesson in not always reacting and staying calm in challenging times. We often place so much emphasis on decision-making that we overlook the power of staying still. The environment is constantly changing, with new competitors, market shifts, laws, and more. But sometimes, the best strategy is to wait patiently for the right moment to shine again. Nature offers countless lessons if we just take the time to observe. Let's embrace the wisdom of staying still when needed. #Leadership #CalmInChaos #BusinessStrategy #NatureLessons #HumanFirstHRSolutions
