Did you know that up until 1993, women were largely excluded from participating in clinical trials? About three decades later, women remain underrepresented in clinical trials. They account for about 29-34% of participants despite being half the population. This #WomensHistoryMonth, we honor and celebrate the women who have taken part in important research to help doctors better understand how treatments impact all people, and we invite women to learn more about clinical trials and how they may help play a part in bridging this gap. 📣I was honoured to attend the launch of the 'Call to Action' campaign with Women Friendly Leeds this week. 💫A group of women located across Leeds, of all different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds, came together to discuss inequalities for women. The information gathered from these sessions will be fed back to key decision makers in March 2025 for International Women's Day, where we ask leaders to pledge change. 🗣️We held a fascinating discussion on the barriers women face surrounding health, employment, safety, confidence and art. I would love for you to have your say on these topics by taking part in our survey about the barriers and challenges women in Leeds face. (Link at end of post). 🫱🏻🫲🏾I believe that we are all "called to action" and that it is crucial we all play our part to tackle intolerance and inequalities in our local communities. However big or small the difference is we make, we should all strive to be advocates of justice and equality because if we don’t all stand together against intolerance (and leave it to the "activists"), then how will we see change and real transformation? Let us all decide to be activists in our homes, our friendships, our places of work and wider communities! Still interested? Here's some important issues that we delved into during our session: 🏥Health inequalities: why, until last July, was it not required for doctors to take lengthy education in women’s healthcare such as menopause, endometriosis, dysmenorrhea (period pain) and more? Why is there still such a lack of education for women themselves on these areas? 👷♀️Employment inequalities: flexible working seems to be stigmatised. For example, taking time off for your children or for carers leave. 💭Safety and abuse: women are still expected to adapt and change their own behaviour to ensure their safety. Emasculation as a barrier to educating and encouraging men to join the conversation and bring about change shows there is more to be said for the breaking down the walls of toxic masculinity. https://lnkd.in/eK4fk3Tx

💖 Join me in celebrating National Women's Health Week! 🩺 As the local Go Red for Women Director with the American Heart Association, every day I think about the importance of women's health. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. While it kills more women than all forms of cancer combined, only 44% of women recognize that cardiovascular disease is their greatest health threat The theme of #NationalWomensHealthWeek this year is "Empowering Women, Cultivating Health: Celebrating Voices, Wellness, and Resilience." The simple truth is- most cardiac and stroke events can be prevented through education and lifestyle changes, such as moving more, eating smart, and managing blood pressure. We know that women face unique health issues at every age and stage of their lives and education is critical to empowering women to be their own health advocates. I'm proud to share this video of a handful of incredible survivors and voices for women's heart health. Two really powerful lines in this video continue to stick with me: 💬 "As I got older, I made the decision to put my health first so I could be there for all of my son's special firsts" 💬 "I've made it this far, and I still have so much more I want to experience in life. That's why as I age and change, so do the ways I care for my heart health." When we come together and empower each other, women are unstoppable. Self-care is NOT selfish! Join me in spreading awareness and support for women's health this week and beyond. Together, we can make a difference! #NationalWomensHealthWeek #WomenEmpowerment #HealthEquity 🌺💪🏽🩺 https://lnkd.in/erJ3Fr_s
