Yesterday, I moderated a panel on behalf of the CCS+ initiative at the IETA #EuropeanClimateSummit exploring the role of the CCS+ carbon accounting framework in bridging voluntary and compliance carbon markets.
First of all, big kudos to Katie Sullivan, Pierra-Lisa Spafford and the rest of the IETA team for putting together an excellent conference. Also, a big thanks to my panellists, representing some of the biggest players in the carbon space:
1) Will Barrett, VP Product Development at 1PointFive - building the largest DACS plant in volume of removals
2) Benedicte Caroline Storebø, BD Advisor at Northern Lights JV - building the largest commercial CO2 storage infrastructure project for biogenic and fossil emissions
3) Ian Kuwahara, Director, Energy and Industrial Innovation Verra - the largest carbon crediting program in the world
The event was timely, with the latest EU #CRCF Expert Group meeting just ending (see Eve Tamme and Sebastian Manhart for useful recaps). It is more important than ever that we discuss how carbon accounting protocols for durable CDR under VCM Standards interface with emerging government-driven protocols for future compliance schemes. The risk of further market fragmentation resulting from exclusivity is always around the corner.
Key questions remain around the transition from the VCM to compliance markets and the validity of pre-purchased credits from projects using existing protocols. Standardization is vital. But does this imply the need for new super detailed government-led protocols? Or can alignment on key principles suffice?
The presentation preceding our panel shed light on the high-integrity work that is already out there or under development. Katie Sullivan, Paul Zakkour and Gyozo David Ungar launched IETA's Geostorage and Crediting Handbook, which provides a valuable synthesis of methods and safeguards on the crediting of reductions and removals involving geological storage (link in comments).
Method / protocol design choices matter, though some more than others. Governments around the world would do well to prevent reinventing the wheel and build on what is already available and being put to use.

An important step forward!
