What do Native American Heritage Month, Mesoamerican Indigenous Communities in the US, and Dia de los Muertos have in common?
November is National Native American Heritage Month, celebrating the traditions and cultures of Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities. Dia de Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead, is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd and is a vibrant Mesoamerican cultural practice in the US, Mexico, and Latin America. It involves decorating graves, building elaborate altars, and enjoying traditional foods to remember/honor/respect loved ones who have passed away.
Unfortunately, the Mesoamerican indigenous communities in the United States are frequently underrepresented. The historical marginalization and discrimination of these communities are some of the reasons for this. For centuries, many Mesoamerican indigenous peoples have suffered from colonialism, oppression, and enforced assimilation, which has resulted in their cultures being erased and suppressed and forced removal from their ancestral homelands. Consequently, they have limited visibility and representation in mainstream social structures within Latin America and the US.
Mesoamerican indigenous communities pertain to a diverse range of indigenous groups that are indigenous to the Mesoamerican region, which comprises present-day Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. The Mesoamerican indigenous groups, such as the Maya, the Olmec, the Aztec, The Mixtec, amongst others, possess a unique cultural heritage characterized by distinct traditions, languages, and customs. Furthermore, socio-economic factors, language barriers, and limited access to education and resources have also contributed to the under-representation of Mesoamerican indigenous communities in the US.
