I have a feeling that setting up Bioconnectors is going to be a powerful catalyst for action, and has the potential to create rapid, and no doubt enormous change. As we've already started in stealth, I can see that the current Bioconnectors have been busy - even over Christmas & New Year. There are 67 of you following Bioconnectors already on LinkedIn - we don't even launch till mid-May (slight matter of book launch and 60th birthday trip to Hokkaido before then!) But as I'm getting so many questions I thought I would share this. We will also launch a proper "trailer" website this month instead of this holding page. Not everyone can be part of Bioconnectors - at least not in the beginning. Remember when Spotify and Clubhouse began and you had limited invites to share with others? It needs to be a bit like that for people to really want to participate, not just stand at the sidelines. We will be inviting biomaterials companies to explain why they should be one of the initial businesses forming part of the community. And then we have the whole of the bioeconomy infrastructure to accommodate: patent lawyers, accountants, investors, government bodies, industrial parks …. The list goes on. Pretty clear from all my convos, that having great tech is not what holds a business back – IT’S EVERYTHING ELSE!! We will invite some businesses pre-May, just because we think they are great, or because they already started on the informal collaborations I’ve set up. In May 2024 we will begin with a few dozen businesses (unless you are ALL utterly brilliant, and we can’t resist) Then we will add 10 additional businesses each month from May to December 2024. That's as much as I'm prepared to share right now. But for context this will be an amalgamation of everything I've learned about changemaking from Sustainable Design Alliance, A Plastic Planet, New Entrepreneurs Foundation, Bioduct Ventures, Circuthon® Consulting and working alongside brilliant NGOs such as Canopy and others too numerous to mention 😆

Can we turn potato peels into power? ENWISE 倍奇能源 green energy does just that at Pepsico's Wuhan plant in China, delivering 25% of the food factory's energy needs. Not only does it help drive energy independence, it also earns strong recognition in the sustainability space for corporates. ✅ Enwise builds on-site green energy plants with the use of dry-anaerobic biodigesters that convert food byproducts/organic waste into biogas/electricity. They use a combination of biotech, engineering and IOT to achieve one of the highest energy outputs in the industry. Nothing is wasted - after the organic waste is used, they're output as high-quality fertilizer. ✅ Enwise is a startup with its market potential identified by CM Venture's founders Min Zhou and Patrick Berbon (白瑞克), and we're excited to see it grow! ✅ Meet Enwise founders Stéphane Vernède and Zhuoya in this exclusive interview video, as they share their journey behind building the business, and what they envision for the renewable energy industry in the near future (with thanks to Yingting LUO from Enwise for her support on the video production). #sustainableenergy #renewableenergy #biogas #bioenergy #organicwaste

Yesterday, we added Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) to Scaler to help companies evaluate the carbon intensity of their bioproducts. Scaler will now generate LCA calculations in its customized techno-economic analysis (TEA) reports, helping companies better understand the environmental impact of their production processes and make more informed decisions for a sustainable future. Get started with the Scaler LCA to see how your process stacks up on these metrics: Cradle-to-Gate Carbon Intensity: Assess the carbon intensity of products from the initial production stages to the point of leaving the manufacturing facility, offering insights into the environmental impact of the entire process. Emission Source Breakdown: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the sources of emissions, with a detailed breakdown that includes feedstock, electricity, natural gas, and other contributing factors. This empowers businesses to target specific areas for improvement. Improvement Strategies: Go beyond analysis and evaluate practical improvement strategies to lower the carbon intensity of products. Strategies include the use of lower carbon feedstocks, adoption of renewable energy, and utilization of biogas, amongst others. Economic and Mass Attribution: Evaluate various attribution methods, including economic and mass attribution of a process to fermentation product and waste biomass. Ready to start modeling? Visit https://scaler.bio/ to get started with the new LCA on Scaler. #Fermentation #LifecycleAssessment #Biomanufacturing #Bioeconomy

With venture capital investment in alternative protein companies seeing a decline last year, have investors completely shifted their perspective on the alt-protein space? The answer is nuanced. Insights from a panel discussion at the Future Food-Tech Alternative Proteins Conference in Chicago shed light on this. The surge in adoption of alt-protein products during the COVID period was perceived as progress but has since waned. What was thought to be adoption was more likely trial spurred by curiosity and experimentation. However, challenges persist, with consumer feedback highlighting ongoing disappointments in taste and texture, especially in alt meat products. As the novelty fades, alt proteins must now focus on earning consumer trust through improvements in taste, texture, healthiness, and affordability.
