My views on the Cement REDUCE-REPLACE Ideology. My research work in promoting New Sustainable Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) is expanding my knowledge of the solutions that have been overlooked for a long time. Recently, I attained the 41MPa mark under the REDUCE Approach: Replacing cement in a normal 30MPa concrete Mix. While cement remains the dominant conventional concrete binder the big questions are: 1. Is the REDUCE, REPLACE approach to Cementitious systems a venture worth exploiting? 2. Is the REPLACE option feasible? 3. How can we make cement manufacturing greener? 4. Are the current innovations to make cement manufacturing Greener SCALABLE and AT WHAT COST? I believe the answers to these questions lie in the Research and Development bracket but transcend R&D alone to a small extent. Mixed slag offers a cost-effective, locally available alternative, increasing supply chain resilience and reducing dependency on natural resources. #Concrete is the most consumed man-made material in the world.  The United States alone is estimated to have consumed 120 million metric tons in 2023.      Our Founder and Managing Director, Donal O’Riain, shares a harsh truth about the binding agent that makes concrete: #cement. Concrete is the second most consumed material worldwide (after water). The key ingredient in concrete is cement and is the source of 8% of the world’s global carbon emissions (3x that of the aviation industry). To put this into perspective, if the cement industry was a country, it would be the 3rd largest emitter in the world behind China and the US*. However, incorporating as little as 0.5% of graphene as an additive in the concrete production process has the potential to significantly reduce the amount of cement needed in the concrete mix design without sacrificing the final performance of the concrete product – dramatically reducing cement’s carbon footprint.
